facts are furnished by a correspondent of
the ‘Scientéfic A_7nerz'ca'n- :
“For every- mile that we .leave*the
surface of our earth the-tempbrature falls
live degrees. At forty-five miles distance
from the globe. we get beyond the atmos-
phere, and enter, strictly speaking into
the regions of space, whose temperature
is 225 degrees below zero ; and here cold
reigns in all its power. Some idea. of this
intense cold may be formed by stating
that the greatest cold observed in the
Arctic Circle is from 40 to 90 degrees be-
low zero ; _ and here many surprising ef-'
fects are produced, In the chemical la-
boratory the greatest cold that we can
produce is about 150 degrees below zero.
At this temperature carbonic acid gas
becomes a solid substance like snow. If
touched it produces just the same effect
on the skin as a red-hot binder ; it blis-
ters._t-lie finger like, a burn. -
Quicksilver or mercury freezes at, 40
degrees below zero ;—that is 72 deg, be-
low the temperature at which water
freezes. Thesolid mercury may then be
treate asother metals, hammered into
sheet. go made into spoons ; such spoons,
howev . ‘,~—would»melt in water as warm as
ice.
It is pretty certain that every, liquid
and gas that ;we are. acquainted with
would become solid if exposed to the
cold of the regions of space. The gas
we light our streets with would appear
like wax ; .oil would be in reality, "as
hard as -rock ;”.,pure spirit, which we have
never yet solidified, would appear. like a
block of transparent crystal. Hydrogen
gass would become quite solid, and re-
semble a metal; we should be able to
turn butter in‘ a lathe like a piece of ivo-
ry; and the fragrant odors of flowesrs
would have tobc made hot before they
would yield perfume. These are a few of
tlieestonishing effects of cold.”

It should always have a great supply of
salt, andof the strongest quality, and
brine should be made and poured into
the barrel. -For if nothing but water is
put in with salt the pork may be injured

for if pieces of meat are permitted to

any considerable time they will be taint-

object is to keep the colt growing. and
healthy, and if thiscan: be done without
any grain so much the better-——at anyrate
I would not give young colts more thaii
two quarts in a day, one in the morning
and one at night, as more would have_ a
tendency to take their appetite from hay,
which is the most natural food for them.

er quantity of the elements of wool than
any other grain or vegetable to make
sheep produce heavy fleeces. They will
eat them with avidity, whole or ground,
even in a damaged state. To «our store
flocks during the winter season we gen-
erally give a pint of beans per day, and
potatoes. Corn is good for fattening
sheep, but not so valuable as beans, peas,
oats, and most other grains, for the pro-

neglected trees, endeavor to do it regular-
ly, so as to preserve a well-balanced head.
Young, stunted trees should be primed
well back, and all fruit buds picked out.-

strong growths should be sparingly "pruned
and, if the the upright centre shoots are"
vigorous, and the lower side branches
weak, the latter should be pruned ‘close,’
and the centre shoots reduced in vigor by
pinching the young shoots during growth ;
_pruning them severely now, will only in-
crease their future vigor. '
