I then got into the gig" and chirruped,
and away went the animal at «startling,
pace; I drove her four or five miles, she
went every way I wanted her, and re-
turned home witha good relish for her

In this way I managed the animal ev-

success. In a few weeks she became so
well acquainted with the "mode as to give
demonstrations of a desire "to go, ' when

the intention of using the lobelia. _In

There is a philosophy in this mode of
management. ‘ ‘In the first pla'c'e',"the an-
imal" was wholly nonplussed by being
treated with ‘the utmost kindness and
gentleness, for she was not ‘used to such
ma‘nagc'ment‘on_snch occasions. Then,
the relaxant influence of lobelia made her
feel nauseous, and -nausea is a~ suitable
suitable antidote‘ to ugliness, softening
down the passions in a _most surprising
manner. The addition of . water was a
decided “cooler” upon the temper aswell
as upon theskin, and was "an" argument
against which stubborness could-not thrive.
The treatment was so ‘effectual in this
case that we are induced to give it a"warm
recommendation. There are some farm-
ers“-who do not have ‘balky horses, that
can yertry it upon themselves and thus
test its potency to great"advantage.”

Consequently, all over Spain, bythe road-
sides andielsewhere, fruit in great abun-
dance tempts thetaste, and is ever free.
Let this practice‘ be imitated in. this
country, and theweary’ wanderer will be
blessed, and will bless the hand that min-
istered to his comfort and joy, We are‘

churl who basks under the shadow and
eats, the fruit of trees which other hands
have planted, if he will not also plant
trees which shall yield fruit to coming

mous for bringing to market’ a better‘ ar-
ticle of cheese than any of his agicultural
neighbors, which occasioned a merchant
to inquire “how it happened. “ I think
I can tell you the secret of it,” said the
squire. “- You may have noticed that
when the milk stands for a while in the
pans, there is kind of‘ yellow scum that
rises on top of it. Now some women are
so dreadful neat that they skim all this
off ; but my wife aiii’t so pertickler, but
stirs‘ it‘ all in ‘togethcrand, ra-aly, I
think the cheese all the better for it.”

Geo. Olmstead, of Hartford, Conn., was
very successful in grafting new tops into
old trees. His rule was always to begin
at the top, and gialtone-third of the tree
in each year—tliree years being thus re-
quired to complete the entire head. By
grafting at the top iirst, the" grafts are
not shaded by the remaining branches :
while the necessary reduction throws the
sap into the remaining side limbs, and
gives them vigor for grafting the next-
year.f A‘ tree seventy-jive years old was
successfully treated in this way. The
fourth year afterwards it ‘bore ten bushels
of apples ; the fifth year eight” bushels ;
