dorses tire 7'_name, is no reason for the
validity of‘ the'4 claim.
At one of-their meetings last Summer,
they said thatthcy did not pretend to

berry, but was the first to introduce it
to the .pl1l)llc-’.tllI'01lgl1 their. Society, and
therefore ‘was entitledto the name. Now
I can prove, that this was not the first
ublic exhibiton, and will refer to the pub-
ished report of the New aven Horti-
cultural Society for 1853, under date of
July 23, ‘~‘ New Rochelle Blackberry, by
F. Troivbifidge, from the garden of Messrs.
George Seymour & Co., Norwalk, Ct.”
I procured.them from the same source
and the same season that Mr. Lawton
procured his plants, and every year have
had as _nia_iiy plants for sale as Mr. Law-
ton. This exliibition was two or three
weeks before Mr. -Lawton exhibited
his at tlic,.;Farni_ei-’s Club in New York.
The New Haveir Society, has the honor
of first introducing the berry to the notice
of the public. The modesty of Messrs.
George Seymour & Co, will not allow
them to attach -their name to this berry,
which they .are‘more entitled to do than
Mr. Lawton -is. '
All I wish is -to see justice done. This
question should come before the Nation-
al Pomologial Convention, and, if, after
athorough examination of the subject,
they decide that Mr. Lawton’s name
should be attached to it, we will yield
the point with all due difference. As
‘we respect Mr. Lawton and his efforts to
bring it before the public, we would by
all means give him his just rights, but
we are unwilling he should assume what
does not belong to him.
We, with others, believe that Mr. Lew-
is A. Seacor, of New Rochelle, who res-
cued the plant from destruction and from
whose stock the plants became dissemina-
ted, is more entitled to the name than
any other person.

n@'*_The artificial propagation of fish,
is a business yet in its infancy ; but the
day will soon come that men will find it
pay better to breed fish in enclosures than
to catch them wild. The ponds of Eu-
rope, artificially stocked, are now yield-
ing great profits. The New York State
Agricultural Society offer $100 for the
best essay on the prodction and preserva-
tion of domestic fish for ponds.
Garlick and Ackley, known as distin-
guished surgeons of Cleveland, Ohio,were
the first, we believe, to introduce the ar-
tificial spawning and domestication of
fish in the United States. Dr. Garlick
being an enthusiastic amateur in this
line, commenced the buiness in connection
with his associate Dr. Ackley,.upon the
farm of the latter, two or’three years
ago. They made several trips to Lake
Superior and Fort Stanly, in Canada, to
procure trout for stocking their streams,
and in every instance were successful ex-
cept the first, when they lost alarge num-
ber of fish in transportation.
After this, with personal attention,
they found that by reducing the tempe-
rature of the water in the vessel contain-
ing the fish. to 32 dogrees, by the appli-
cation of ice the reqiiration and circula-
tion in fish was so reduced that they*ex-
perienced no difficulty in trasporting them
any distance with perfect success. In this
way'they have procured at different times,
150 full grown trout. -
Feeling an interest in the success of
this enterprise, and while visiting Cleve- e‘
land a short time since, we called on Drs.
Garlick and Ackley, . who very kindly
conveyed us to the farm and fish nur-
sery, situated about three miles from the
city. -‘ The farm contains about 100 acres ;
through the tinibered_portion of it runs a
ravine, abudantly supplied with never
failing streams of water.—Across this ra-
vine dams have been built so as to form
the ponds, connected by sluiceways be-
tween. Iii the upper pond the’ young
trout are confined by netting across the
sluce. The second ponds are destined for
the fish after they have become so large
as to be able to protect themselves from
the verocious appetite of the elder fish of
their race.
At the head of a large spring, and near
the upper ‘pond, is situated the hatching
house. - In this house is a tank four feet
wide by eight feet long and two deep.——
The water is received from the spring in-
to this tank, and is disc-liarged from a
pipe near the top into the hatching boxes,
ten in numb‘er, and so arranged that the
first is higher in the series than the last,
so that there is a constant stream of wa-
ter pasiug from the tank above, through
the two hatching boxes. In this box we
'saiv.the old pet fish’ “Naiad Queen,” the
prolific mother of tli0l1S£l.IiLl§. Her male
“ Tryton,” like his sex sometimes in other
departments of animated nature, had be-
come somcivliat unruly, and had been as-
- sighed his abode, for the time being, in
one of the ponds with the family at large.
Our friends have so educated and trained
the old queen that she has become as
tame as a pet chicken, and ate minnows
from our fingers readily. This fish was
taken from the tank and placed in a pan
for our inspection. She is like all of this
family, truly beautiful. She measures
about seventeen inches in length. Her
weight we.now forget, but with careful
feeding can be increased with astonishing
rapidity. I-Ve were presented by the geri-
tlemanly proprietors with a most beauti-
ful 'eiigraving of her.
Dr. G_ar.licl{_isiioii' engaged in writing
a series of articles on the “ Artificial Re-
prodctio'n'of Fish,” which appear in the
Ohio Farmer. Tliey will finally be pub-
lishcd in book form, and will no doubt,
prove of imniensc value to farmers and
others who now own streams and ponds
in this country.
In every-State in the Union, and in
almost ,_evei'y'.country, there are numerous
springs and streams that, with compara-
tive littlelabor, may be turned to profit-
able account for the producion of fish.
VVhere5br_isk, cold springs are not to be
foun_d suited for trout, ponds exist adap-
ted-to variousotlier kinds of fish that de-
light in such water. In a day’s ride
through some sections of the country, we
have frequently met with a dozen springs
and streams._.tli_at might be employed in
this way. - In France, and other coun-
tries of Europe, not only trout and many
other kinds ofstill-water fish are propa-
gated to great extent, but S8.l11101!-.--‘by

eru sections of’ our country, but more par-
ticularly near the Northern Pacific coasts,
numerous places abound most admirably
adapted to salmon. -It is said that a
thousand pound of fish in proper places
can be produced at a tithe of the cost of
raising an equal quantity of meat.
