Legislature of New Jersey says: “ The value
of‘ these marls is best seen in the rich and
highly cultivateddistrict which has been im-
proved, almost made, by their use, but. it
may be interesting to examine the causes of
their great value‘ in Agriculture, and toicom
pa-re them withotber fertilizers.- For exam-

erage of five per cent. of the whole weight of
the Mill, a bushel when dry weighing eighty
pounds. and in the proportion mentioned
would eontainfour pounds of potash, this is
nearly as mu‘ch as there is in a bushel of un-
leaehed wood ashes.” And again, it is prob-
ablathat the great value of the Marl is to be
found in the fact that it contains nearly all
the substances necessary to make up the ash
of our common cultivated plants.
