and immediately made a meal of his op-

Much is saidand written in favor of the
birds; but frogs and snakes we regard
as very useful, and more attention
should be directed to their merits, as there

them great advantage, quite indepen-
dently of their merits. There are how-
ever two birds, who do not get fair play,
on account of-asimllar prejudice, These

Apple-s‘.—Ili grafting large trees, sev-
eral -‘varieties of scions are frequently
used in forming a new top; there are
several objections to this practice. tav-
ery one at all familiar with fruit-trees,
must have observed that each variety
has a mode of growth peculiar to itself,
and those who .-have -had much experi-
ence can often ascertain the kind, when
not in fruit, ‘by this circumstance alone.
Some vartct_ies are vigorous and of rapid
growth, 0l.llel'S'aI'e-8lO\V "and unthrifty,
and ot_hers,of short duration and subject
to decay early. A tree combining these
discordant‘ elements can possess little
of -symmetry or beauty, and the most
judicious pruning cannot ‘remedy the
evil. For instance a tree may be graf-
tedwith the Northe_rn Spy,‘which is of
l‘¢I!lar.l_table upright growth; the Rox-
blllry .R.u'sset, which is horizontal, or
spreading, and the Spitzenburg. whose
branches are drooping, pendant. In a_
few years the soions clash and entangle,
and it will be impossible to give them
the propper form or directio_n,‘and when
the tree comes into bearing the defect
will be still more apparent. ' There is
another objection to having more than
one variety in atree’; it creates confusion
in gathering thefruit, and where they
‘ somewhat resemble" each other, they are
liable to get mixed, causing dissatisfac-
tion among the purchasers,
To Make Mock Strawberries.-Cut
up ripe peaches and soft. mild eating ap-
ples, in the proportion of three to one,
into pieces the size of strawberries and
mix themwith a proper portion of su-
gar, and after they have stood together
a few hours -and mingle their flavors,
even an arneteur. if he will not look at
the bash, might mistake it for strawber-
ries.

others, of Detroit, broke his leg a few
days since, in springing up after rolling.

and was deemed one of the most beauti-

First Trip of thr first Locomotive in
America.-—William Wtirts, esq. of Car.
bondale Penn., communicates the fol-
lowing paragraph, clipped from an old
newspaper, to the Carhondale Tran-
script. The paragraph confirms the
Statement of R. F. Lord, esq., published
in the Port Jervis Union, a few weeks
since, and apparently settles the question
as to’ whom belongs the credit of having
run the first locomotive steam-engine on
the American continent:

tio'rivE.—Major' Horatio Allen, the Eu-
gineer of the New York and Erie Rail-
road, in a speech made during the recent
festival occasion, gave the following ‘ac-
count of the first trip made by a locomo-
tive on this continent ; '
‘‘ When was it? Who was it 9--
And who awakened its energies and di.
rectcd its movements? It was in the
year I828, on the banks of the Lacka-
waxeu, at the coinmeiicetiiellt of the
railroad connecting the canal of the
Delaware and Hudson Canal Company
with their coal tnines—-and he who ad-
dresses you was the orlly person on that
locomotive. The circumstances which
led to my being alone oil the engine were
these. The road had been builtin the
summer. the structure was of hemlock
timber, and rails of large ‘dimensions
notched on caps placed far apart. The
timber had cracked and warped from
exp sure to the sun. Alter about 300
feet of straigllt line the road cosscd the
Lnckawzlxcll Creek, on lre.-tle work
about 30 feet with a curve of 350 to
400 feet radius. The impression was
very general that this iron monster
would either break down the road or it
would leave the track at the curve and
plutlg into the creek. My reply to
such apprehensions was that it was too
