the report of the committee appointed to set-
tle upon a site for holding the next fair and to
transact other business appertaining thereto.
All interested in the success of the exhibition

DEAR SIR,—I understand from a gentleman
who was present at a Fremont meeting, held
at Westport (Conn.) on the evening of.‘ Thurs-
day last, that you challenged any man in the
State of Connectlciit, to debate in public the
claims of the respective candidates for the
Presidency of the United States, upon the suf-
frages of the American People.
And further that you offered to meet any
one who would accept your challenge, at any
time or place by him named.
Now, therefore being an advocate of the
claims of Buchanan and Breckenridge in op-
position to those of Fremont and Dayton, I
accept your challenge, name Westport as the
place (because there you publicly gave the
challenge) and will meet you at the above
named place at such time as may be conven-
ient to us. ,
Please communicate your pleasure with re-
gard to the above acceptance at your earliest
convenience, and state what time willbe most
agreeable to you -

Borough Meeting.
WHEREAS an Act was passed by the
General Assembly of 1855, extending
and enlarging the limits of the Borough of
Norwalk, and whereas at the time of the pas-
sage of the said act there existed is consid-
erable indebtedness against said Borough, and
whereas a further Act was passed by the Gen-
eral Assembly of 1856, authorizing and em-
powering the present Warden and Burgesses
of said Borough to call a meeting of the inhab-
itants thereof, residing within the limits of
said Borough as existing and established at
and immediately prior to the passage of said
Act of 1855, for the purpose of laying a tax on
said inhabitants to defray said indebtedness.
Now therefore, notice is hereby given to said
inhabitants of said Borough residing as afore-
said, that a special Meeting of the same will
be held at the Town House in said Borough,
on Thursday the 4th day of September, 1856,
at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, pursuant to the
provisions of said act of 1856, for the purpose
of laying a tax as aforesaid to defray said in-
debtedness.

CULTURAL SOCIETY.
HIS Fair will be holden in Nonwsnx, on
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fri-
day, the 23d, 24th, 25th and 26th days of Sep-
tember 1856, on the Mott Property Park, a.
convenient and central point of access from
the Railroads. ~
The Committee of Arrangements are confi-
dent that the liberal Premiums offered, and
the desirable and, attractive arrangements
which will be made, will bring out pot only an
unsurpassed display of the fine animals with
which our County abounds, but will also se-
. cure the co-operation of our many Manufac-
turers, Mechanics, Artizans, &c., thus render-
ing this Fair one of the most attractive and
satisfactory exhibitions ever held in this
County. .
The efforts of every friend of the Society
are earnestly solicited to aid to the extent of
their ability, in adding any feature of attrac-
tion to the Exhibition. The Ladies, also, are
cordially invited to present the varied fruits
of their handiwork. .
It is desirable that early notice be given the
Secretaries by those who design to exhibit,
and the amount and character of space they
will require, in order that suitable arrange-
ments may be made therefor.
Arrangements will be made with our Rail-
roads for the transmission of all articles intend-
ed fol‘ exhibition, free.
Those appointed on Committees will confer
a great favor by notifying the Secretary of
their willingness to serve, at the Ticket Office,
on the first day of the Fair. They will also
greatly facilitate the business of the Exhibi-
tion by being promptly on the ground at the
hours named by the Secretary.
A Programme of each day’s proceedings,
will be issued each morning, the same as last
year, detailing the arrangements as perfected.
Several distinguished Agricultural Speak-
ers have been engaged to address the members
of the Society on the different days of the Ex-
hibition. '
The Vice Presidents of the Society in the
different towns are earnestly requested to so-
licit the co-operation of such Agriculturists,
and Manufacturers in their, respective towns,
as may be able,.to contribute any product of
their labor and skill that will add an interest
to the Exhibition, and also to invite to mem-
bership their friends and neighbors.

tee, is capable of forcing water to 8 greater
elevation than any other Ram, with the some
head and supply of water, and warranted not
to stop working at any time, if there is a suffi-
cient supply of water, and no leak or air traps
in the drive pipe.
In the ordinary ram. the valve rests upon the
aperature it is designed to close, presenting_a
much larger upper surface for the pressure In
the air chamber than in the area. on thelower
surface, on which the water acts in opening Iii
consequently, the pressure per square inch re-
quired to lift the valve is as much greater in
proportion as the area of the upper surface is
greater than the area of the aperature——hence
the great loss of power.
The principal improvement in this over oth-

consequently, there is no loss of power in its
action-hcnce its ability to throw more water
than other rams which, having valve seats. are
liable to catch and retain sand or gravel, and
thereby to leak and get out of order. Other
important advantages will be apparent in view-
ing it while in operation.

THE Pipes are connected with the ram with
brass screw couplings, and the air cham-
ber and body of the ram is put together with
cotter wedges, and can be taken apart and re-
stored in one minute.
Although the prices of the above rams are
more than the common order of rams, yet their
intrinsic value is more than ten times greater.

Six : In reply to your note, I would say that
you placed one of your No. 3 hydraulic rams
upon my premises, about eighteen months ago,
near a reservoir‘ of water which is supplied by
an unfailing spring. This reservoir is nearly
three hundred yards from my dwelling, and
with ii fall of eight feet you elevated the wa-
ter seventy-eight feet, to a tank in the upper
story, from whence it is distributed by pipes
in various directions. The rain delivers in the
tart about 1,600 gallons daily; and by this
means a fountain seventeen feet in diameter
and three feet deep is kept constantly full of
running water, and. a jet is furnished which
can throw it more than twenty feet into the
air. The surplus not used. about l.200 gallons
each day, serves to water the terraces, plants
and flowers. This instrument works constant-
ly, winter and summer, without freezing. and
without cessation, with no muscle to grow
weary, no nerve to relax, no breast to feel
faintness. Its value to me can hardly be esti-
mated, as it furnishes us with an unsfinted
supply of the purest water, which we lavishly
use without the least regard to economy in its
employment. If my opinion can be of any
service to the public, you may express it in
any form you please.
