HE subscribers have established a NEW
CoAL YARD ab Norwalk, on the east side
of’ the Bridge, on Smith’s Dock below the Pot-
tery, where they intend to keep constantly on
hand and are now delivering a very superior
article of Goal, of‘ the different sizes required
for family use, such as for the furnace, parlor
and kitchen stoves. Our stock is all fresh and
pains have been taken to secure the best kinds
known in the market, such as Spring Mount-
ain Lehigh, and the Locust Mountain White
Ash; acknowledged by good judges to have
no superior. We have also the Pittston vari-
ety, all of which kinds we will sell at fair re-
muuerating prices. A share of the public
patronage is respectfully solicited.

which a Silver Medal was awarded by the
American Institute, Oct. 1855. The above
Ram which is a. recent invention of the paten-
tee, is capable of forcing water to a greater
elevation than any other Ram, with the same
head and supply of water, and warranted not
to stop working at any time, if there is a sum-
cieiit supply of water, and no leak or air traps
in the drive pipe.
In the ordinary rain. the valve rests upon the
aperature it is designed to close, presenting_a
much larger upper surface for the pressure in
the air chamber than in the area. on the lower
surface, on which the water acts in opening it ;
consequently, the pressure per square inch re-
quired to lift the valve is as much greater in
proportion as the area of the upper surface is
greater than the area of the aperature—lience
the great loss of power.
The principal improvement in this over oth-
er water rams, consists in the upper and lower
surfaces of the valve opening—into the air
chambcrs—being of the same area, the pres-
sure per square inch required to open it is but
slightly greater than that in the air chamber ;
consequently, there is no loss of power in its
o.ction—hence its ability to throw more water
than other rains which, having valve seats,are
liable to catch and retain sand or gravel, and
thereby to leak and get out of order. Other
important advantages will be apparent in view-
ing it while in operation.
The subscriber has been a practical plumber
in this city and elsewhere for the past twenty
years, and trusts, by strict attention to the
business, in all its various branches, to merit
full confidence.

brass screw couplings, and the air cham-
ber and body of the ram is put together with
cotter wedges, and can be taken apart and re-

Sin : In reply to your note, Iwould say that
you placed one of your No. 3 hydraulic rams
upon my premises, about eighteen months ago,
near a reservoir of water which is supplied by
an unfailing spring. This reservoir is nearly
three hundred yards from my dwelling, and
with a fall of eight feet you elevated the wa-
ter seventy-eight feet, to a tank in the upper
story, from whence it is distributed by pipes
in various directions. The rain delivers in the
tank about 1,600 gallons daily; and by this
means a fountain seventeen feet in diameter
and three feet deep is kept constantly full of
running water, and a jet is furnished which
can throw it more than twenty feet into the
air. The surplus not used, about 1.200 gallons
-each day, serves to water the terraces, plants
and flowers. This instrument works constant-
ly, winter and summer, without freezing. and
without cessation, with no muscle to grow
weary. no nerve to relax, no breast to feel
faintness. Its value to me can hardly be esti-
mated, as it furnishes us with an unstinted!
supply of the purest water, which we -lavishly
use without the least regard to economy in its
employment. If my opinion can be of any
service to the public, you may express it in
any form you please.
