The Coronerfis Jury of Montgomery
County on the Northern Pennsylvania
Railroad calamity, rendered their ver-
dict this afternoon, attributing the acci-
dent to Conductor Hoppel's disobedience
of regulations, and acquitting the late
Mr. Van Stavoren, conductor of the
down train, and Engineer Lee of all the
blame. :
“ I hesitated whether I should use a horse-
whip or cowhide, but knowing thafihe strength
of the Senator from Massachusetts was superi-
or to mine, I thought he might wrest it from
me. If he had done that I should have regret-
ted it for the remainder of my life.
“ A voice—He would have killed him,”
. Brooks.
Pleasant hesitation between a homi-
cide and a battery! Here we have Mr.
Brooks giving us excellent reasons why
he hit hard in the first place. The val-
iant conspirator had taken eweeet coun-
sel together; had estimated the chance
of being whipped; had calc-ulated the
weight of Sumner; had determined with
murderous accuracy upon the amount of
force necessary, It was for this reason
that the satellites Keitt and Edmundeon
were in attendance. It was for this rea-
son that ‘one of them begged the princi-
pal conspirators to save his wind before
going into the contest; It was for this
reason that Mr. Brooks selected the head
of his victim as the point of attack.-
The Senator must have no chance to
rise after the first blow; the knightly
souls who assailed him could grant him
no opportunity of defence, lest the con-
sequences might be such as the South
Carolinian would regret for the remain-
der of his life; -lest murder might then
and there be done, and there be dp’ue,
and the chief slaughterer might carry
away upon his soul the brand of ‘Cain.
The representative from South Caro-
lina “knew the strength of the Senator
from Massachusetts,” and he wisely ac-
ted upon the knowledge. He took him
unawares. He felleu him when in a
position rendering assistance impossible.
He made sure, after his victim was
prostrate, by a few superfluous blows.-
Let his confessions, put in extenuatiou,
go to the country ! Let the voters of this
enlighted Republic see how utterly friv-
olous they are! Let them pass upon
this bungling, ehufliing defence, made
by the courtesy of an indignant House,‘-
and utterly unworthy of that courtesy;

The Next ‘Prcsz'dcnt.—In so far as
judgement can be formed from our
American exchange, we are inclined to
think that Fremont is the favorite cau-
didate, and the previous history of the
bold adventurer points him out as a man
emiuQntly calculated to..wield the des-
tines of a great nation to its advantage,
and to his honor. Our only fear is that
the ascent from Pierce to Fremont is too
eudd n and great to be expected. The
common sense of the British people has
often saved them in the~darkest hour of
danger; let us hope that the same ele-
' ment may be triumplhdut in the time that
tries men's souls in the ,United States,
among a kindred race.

Torpidity and congestion vitiate the bile and render
