, narrative of the Kane Expedition with

a breathless attention, and from it learned
that the intrepid navagator left his ves-
sel fast in the almost impenetrable moun-
tains ofice in latitude 78 deg 45 min.
north, pushing, his way in sledges and on
foot to latitude 82 deg, 30 min where he
stood upon the shores of, t_o his eye, ‘a
limitless sea. Three thousand square
milesdid he scan with eye and glass,
and yet no bounds to that "expanseof
water were found ; for ,fil'i.y-two days did
a heavy gale from the North heave up
the heavy surf, and yet it brought down
not a particaloficesliowing that around
the pole was ocean life instead of freezing
death. Thus wasvthe veil penetrated ;
surprise seized upon the philosophical

Northern Sea grows more and more ex-
citing.

Over the grand ice barrier which Dr.
Kane passed was a new land, and he
called it VVasliington, giving names also
to its bays and capes. Beyond this is
that sea, and that sea bathes the North
P-.2-le-it holds the mystery of the Nortli-
ern Lights in its keeping—-it keeps the
secret of its own life within its own lio-
som——will man ever solve that secret
and open up that unknown world? We
shall patiently await in hope, for in our
mind is vague thoughts floating that the
sea which whirls around the poles of
this earth, holds in its keeping the key
toa thousand ii.-ysteries, and we have
faiih to believe that in our years—sliould
they be three score or more—tliat myiliic
sea shall give up its long kept. secret.

to plow and narrow the ground as if for
corn or potatoes; then start the plow

These Ships are the most magnificent that

The Ships allowance of provisions comprises
flour, oat-meal, bread, potatoes, peas or beans,
rice and vinegar, which is dealt out to the
passengers once or twice a week during the
voyage, at the" rate 10 1-2 lbs. per week for
each adult. and half allowance for children
under 12 years ; and in addition to the above,
a further allowance, according to a late act of
the British Parliament, two oz. tea, half lb.
sugar, and half-pound molasses, to each adult,
weekly, with three quarts water daily. In all
cases where any of the persons paid for de-
cline coming out, the full passage money is
returned without any deduction.

Persons residing in the country that desire
to send money to their friends in the Old
Country, and ivisliing ‘to save time and ex-
pense, can have it done in a satisfactory and
correct manner, by enclosing by post, to the
subscribers the sum which they wish to send.
with the name and address of the party who is
to receive it, when a draft on the nearest
Branch to their residence will be forwarded by
the first Stcamcr with as much punctuality as
if the person sending it was present, and it re-
ceipt returned for the money by next mnil.
