er, bearing very large and exceedingly

It is said to be even earlier than the Di-
aria, which we question, but it will on-
doubtedly prove a very valuablesort for
all the northern portions of the Union,
especially for marketing. The Els1Ing-
burg is an excellent. hardy grape but
quite small.
For vineyard planting, where each
vine is trained to a stake, 1500 to 2000
vines are required for an acre. A fewer
number is needed for trellis training.-—
The Isabella and Clinton are usually
sold at $12 or $15 per hundred, and
probably lower by the thousand, the Di
aria for about one dollar each, and the
Concord at three dollars—too high for
vineyard planting at present. All may
be had of most of the. principal nursery-
men.
Transplaming .Eoe7~g7-ee72s.——lt is
understood this is not difiiciilt. They
are generally killed by deep planting
and the want of leaves from the woods,
or half decayed straw, or fan, or some
thing of the kind t.o keep the ground
moist. Prepare the ground deep if you
have time, take the hemlock or red ce-
dar, spread the roots nicely on the smooth
surface, cover three fourths of an inch
deep, put. on four inches of moist leaves
and confine with brusli——few will die.—-
Shade during the first summer. A bush
full of leaves set on the south side isthe
best.
The nurseryman must do his (lnty.——
He must take the trees up well, and di-
rect, that the roots be kept moist. and not
exposed to the sun or air until planted.
In the absence of moss or wet leaves, a
wet sheet may be put immediately around
the roots and lightly around the tops.——

the singular and beautiful butterfly plant
is now in bloom-at the National green
house in Washington. The blossoms
are very large and yellow, with reddish
brown spots, and are moved to and fro
with every breath of air, so as to resem-
ble very much the gaudy inse_ct from
which it derives its name. The plant
was brought, from the Island of St.
Thomas in the U. S. frigate Raritan.

raw state, or when they are baked, or
stewed, and it cannot be denied that
they furnish one of the most wholesome
and agreeable kinds of diet. Although

mer says that a feather dipped in spirits
of turpentine, and the parts most infest-
ed touched with it, will destroy the in-

clogged and they cannot breathe.

How to Produce Large Fo‘uz’t.-—-A
correspondent. of the Ga.¢(len.er’.s' Ga-
zette says that bv a very simple and easy
process. fruits of all kinds may be raised
about one-third larger than is usually
the case. and of greatly improved quali-
ty. The secret consists in supporting
the fruits so that they shall not be al-
lowed to hang their whole weight upon
the stalk, or to twist about in the wind.
The Gazette states that when the fruit.
is allowed to hang naturally upon the
stalk, the increasing weight strains the
stem, or twig, and thus lessen the quan-
tity of nutritious food flowing to the
fruit. The fruit may be supported eith-
er by tyiug it to a branch with a piece
of matting, or by enclosing it in a small
‘net. Flowers, such as dahlias or peo-
mes, may also be rendered much larger
by the adoption of this system.
