TWO nights prcvioiis to the day so

horse (more honorable than all the 0th-

ground, thereby precipitating his royal

my lord Nelson, and other nobles to the
Earth, in beautiful illustration of the
leaps of a frog. After repairing the
damages they again sallied forth and
proceeded slowly and cautiously along
the unfrequented road in the deep val-
ley of the Norwalk —River, surrounded
on either side by a dense forest. Thus
they continued on their route without.

crowded to their utmost capacity with

must pass, and consequently destroy a
large quantity thereof, and his heart
was filled with grief, but at the coin-
mand of his driver he was compelled to
proceed, yet. how different was his page
and attitude when traveling through the
elysian fields to what they were when
outspeeding the engine. Then, with
long and rapid leaps lie, sped, scarce
touching the ground, with head erect,
nostrils extended, and inane floating to
the breeze, he bore a striking analogy to
the wild horse of tliePrairié. But now
how changed. With slow and faltering
steps he moves, his head hanging low
upon his breast willi shame for his un-
feeling drivers, and his attitude rescin-
bling that of some grief \vorn being
about to be ushered into the spirit world

porting it to the highway. They then
proceeded noiselessly hoineward until
they reached a necess between the moun-
tains when they began to sing songs of

excelled by the belles of New York or
Paris. There was one present who de-
serves lll0l'L". than a passing notice, yet it
is useless to attempt a fair description of
this angel. My pen would fail to por-

appeared like a guardian angel sent to
guide man on to Paradise. All enjoyed
her presence and she was adiiiired and
beloved by all both rich and poor. Mr

Plum himself spoke most favorably of
her. Even the sound of her sweet
name fills Kings and Emperors with
terror. Her fatlicr mysteriously left
Norwalk oiitlie Fourth. His name. was
“Pat9'7'ot2Tsm.” Her name is ‘LIBERTY.’

LITTLE A.

C-'omzect7.'cui in l756.—-The Hartford
Courant piiblislies some interesting stat-
istics of the population of this State in
1756, obtained from an old paper printed

at. that date. From this it appears, that

there were then six couiities and 73
towns in the colony. The total number
of inhabitants was 130,611 :

Litclifield County had the smallest,
number of inliabitants; Barkl]ai1]3[ed
having only 18; Hartlaiid 12; Norfolk
84 ; and VVinchester 24.

Tile largest population was in Nor-
wich, which had 5540; the next; was
Middfetown, with 5464; and the next
New Haven with 5086. Hartford had
3027 of which 101 were iiegroes. Far-
miiigton 3707, and \VindsorV 5220, then
went above Hartford, as did Wallingford
3713; New London 3171, Stonington
3518: Falrfiem 4445. Norwalk 3050,
Siraifoid, 3658, and Lebanon 3274.

 The Nortliérn Light arrived Sunday
evening from San nan, after a remarkably
short. passage of less than twenty days. She
brings $940,000 in gold. The news by this ar-
rival is of uncommon interest. Accounts from
the mines are favorable. Several deaths from
Cholera took place on the passage of’ the Sierra
Nevada froni San Juan to San Francisco. Col.
Kinney has arrived at San Juan with a party
of twenty-foiir choice spirits. Advices from
Acapulco announce that Santa Anna had rc-
sigiled the Presidency of Mexico, and that Al-
varez litid marched on the capital with 30,000
troops.

$18‘ Gov. Clark has coinniuted the sentence
of Mrs. Robinson, the inurderess, to 'lmpl‘lS0l1-
motif. for life in Sing Sing prison.

were, during the last month. taken from the
Bristol Copper Mine. It is said to yield at
profit of about $1,800 per month. The Cobalt
and Nickel mine, at Middle Haddain, Middle-

business.

The evening preceding the Fourth.
kind reader, had you been at the George-
town Depot, you could have gazed upon
a party of some half a dozen young,
brave and patriotic men, whose object in
meeting was not concealed, but publicly
avowed, and whose hearts knew neither
fear not shame. Their motto was "our
gun ere the moi'row’s sun shall rise,”
yet none knew where it was, and none
expected to find it uiiiil it should be
fired, which it was supposed would be
done at 12 o’clock, but the hour of 12
arrived and the gun was not fired. It
was then deemed best to commence a
search. Accordingly a search was coin-
menced and nothing of'importance oc-
curred until a barn close upon the high-
waywas found locked, bolted, and doub-
le bolted, and also another building not
more than two rods distant, where lay
(upon their Arms) the noble and inipo-
sing guard. An entrance was gained
(without the aid of Hobbs) with consid-
erable noise which brought forth the fe-
rocious dog belonging to the guard, who
made night hideous by his unearthly
yells. No attention however was given
him. . lie was allowed to do as he plea-
sed, and be pleased to make :1 terrible
noise. The gun was uncliained, an Liti-
muffied lumber box wagon driven with-
in one rod of those noble Castiliaiis
while they were fondly dreaming of the
glories in store for tberti. The gun was
placed in tlie wagon, driven back to the
Higlits, mounted, and a national salute
tired ‘at daybreak. Let us for a moment
r.;turn to the vigilant and patriotic guard.

bing their eyes some ten minutes went
