A The Administration has removed Gov.
,Re'eder, and has appointed John L. Dawson in
"his place. This step, says the 7'ril17In(‘_. is in-
tended to gratify tho. slave-breeding interest
and to remove an obstacle to the execution of
‘the plans of the Missouri mob now sitting in
Kansas as the Legislature of the territory.-
Dawson was a member of Congress when the
Missouri prohibition was destroyed, and was
‘an accomplice in the act. He. will doiibtless
give full satisfaction to the Missourians.

On the 15th of August next will com-
mence the Annual Musical Convention
atthe Tremont Temple in this city un-
derthe direction of Professors Johnson
and ‘Frost, which will continue for nine
days, the order of exercises being as fol-
lows, viz : ‘
On Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock
the Convention will be opened by a
grand concert. This will be divided
into two parts—-1st, J. H. Wilcox, Esq.-
will pcrform on the celebrated organ
wl_iic_l_i was built expressly for this Hall
by Messrs. E, &: G. G. Hook, who prob-
ably‘_sta'nd highest, as Organ builders, in
this country, the elder partner having
learned’ his profession while ap-
prentice to William M. Goodrich, the
pioneer in that brapch of the profession
in America. This organ is the largest
and most comprehensive in this country,
and also work of art, as well as a con-
doused ‘embodiment of music, would re-
payalmost any amount of expense in-
coma‘ by attending the Convention.-
We_coiild sit for..hours_ without the re-
motes: ideaof fatigue, and listen to the
musicrthat flows from this instrument
under the almost magic influence of Mr.
Wilcox’s fingers. , - . _
' -The organ consists of four complete
maneuls from CC to A, in. all 58 notes,
the swell throng/rout, and an independ-
ent_‘Pedal Organ .,from CCC to D, 27
notes. Three bellows, at different pres-
sures, worked by steam, supply the or-
gan with wind, and every variety of tone
together with all the novelties, of tli'e
most celebrated European organs, which
are implied in seventy registers, render
it an organ worth going far to hear.’

end of the Hall is fifty feet high and_
fiftyfeez‘ /wide, and the instrument is con-
cealed by a beautiful open work screen.

The unusual size, compass and effect- -.

iveness of the swell, the complete pedal
organ, and the solo, or fourth manuel,
(which latter is an uncommon thing
evéniin Europc,) combined with perfect
equality and finish in_ the voicing, and
on easy, delicate touch, place this organ
farin advance of anything our country
has known, and nearly if not quite on a
level with those of England and the
Continent,

When we reflect that organ building
has barely commenced in this country so
late as the beginning of the 19th centu-
ry, the fact that so immense and ‘perfect
an instrument should have been built in
America, scarce sixty, years having
elapsed, fills us with astonishment. The
extent of this organ can be surmised
when we state that the Double Bourbon
pipe in the Pedal Organ is thirty two
feet in length. We regret that a lack
of space forbids a more minute . descrip-
tion of this wonderful instrument, but
even were we to eulogize it in our most
glowing terms, we should fall far short
of its true reality, as witnessed in listen-
ing to it during a performance by Mr.
Wilcox, -whose "intimate connection with
it from its very nuclius, combined with
-his extensive musical learning, render
him so nearly perfect upon the instru-
ment which we may almost say be con-

verts into a thing divine.

V_ After the conclusion of the organ per-
formance Rossirii’s justly celebrated and
admired "Stabat Mater” will be sung in
full chorus, and this will constitute the
pecond part of the Concert.

On Thursday morning will commence
. the regular daily exercises. This order

will be continued every day. Each lec-

N. Johnson will lecture on Harmony
and Thorough Bass. Prof. J. having
spent a number of years in Germany in
the pursuance of this study, is better
adapted, probably, for this branch of mu-
sical instruction than almost any man
in the country, as indeed his unbounded
success during a great number of years,
throughout the United States,.in almost
every part of which he has in Conven-
tion or otherwise ‘lectured and taught
will show.

From 9 to 10 o’clock instruction will
be given in the mode of teaching sing-
ing schools by,J. Osgood, Esq., author

‘of the “Bay State Collection ” and the

'“Melodia Sacra." lVlr. Osgood is well
known as an instructor in public vocal
music, and this course will be peculiarly
valuable to those who intend to adopt, or
now follow this branch. of the profes-
sion.

‘From 10 toll o’ clock Prof. E. H.
Frost, the celebrated tenor singer will
lecture on the - cultivation of the voice.
His smooth, delightful voice combined
with apleasing exterior, and an uncon-
trollable vein of wit, ’mid all which can

. be traceda thorough knowledge of his
subject will render this an agreeable and
highly instructive exercise.» Had we

of the Convention will ‘be drilled in
Choir practice by Profs. Johnson and
Frost, the entire body being treated as a
Choir, and the same course of procedure
adopted which has succeeded so admira.
bly in Prof. Johnson’s choir at Peck st.
churoli in this city, causing it to rank as
a choir, among the first in Boston, We
speak advisedly. All who assist in sing-
ing the praises of God in the churches
01 New England should attend this ‘ex-
ercise, a correct knowledge of the true
mode of singing the sr>ngs—of Zion being
so entirely indispensable. '
From 3 to 5 o'clock Glees, Operas
and Oratorio choruses will be practiced
under the direction of ‘Prof. L. H. Sou-
thara of this city, the well known reach-
er and composer, Prof. S. has been uni-
versally and siiigularly successful in this
branch of instruction, and ranks among
our first men as a teacher, while few
can equal him in his compositions, so
beautiful, chaste, . and indeed, we may
say perfect.

From 5 to 6 o’clock old American
tunes will be practiced. Prof. N. D.
Gould who has taught music since the
year 1797, will assist the conductor in
this exercise, which will be one of un-
common interest and benefit, I

An additional inducement to attend
the Teachers’ Class will be found in the
fict that there will be a Concert every
evening in the Great Hall of the Tom
pie, for ‘the eight evenings following the
Wednesday which ushers in the Con
vention. On Thursday evening at 8
o’clock, the Concert will commence with
a grand Organ performance, similar, to
that described in the notice of the
W'ednesday p. m. Concert, after this
dramatic portions of the Oratorio of Da-

On Friday evening the first part of
the Concert will consist of miscellaneous
music, and there will be sung Mozart’s
12th Mass, perhaps the most didicult
and beautiful ou_e ever written. Satur-
day evening there will be a grand or-
chestral Concert. Two s:cnes from an
Opera which is now in process of com.
position by Prof L. H. Southard, will
be performed under his direction, as also
two Oveitures by the same composer.-—
On Sunday _ evening one of the city
choirs will sing a number of specimens
of Church music, carefully prepared for
the occasion. This will be a Concert
adaptedto the day the conductors of
the Convention desiring above all things
to observe rightly the ‘sanctity of the
day. 0u,Monday evening Solos will be
performed by professional singers, and
on the piano forte by professional pian-
ists. Tuesday evening there will be an
Old Folks Concert, and all the old Sin-
gers nave been invited to join in the ex-
ercises, adding their voices to the gener-
al chorus. Wednesday evening, Solos
will be sung by volunteer singers counec
ted with the class, and on Thursday-
evening the Grand Finale Concert will
be held, which will consist of Choruses,
all the members of the Convention will
join in this exercise and the effect will
be magnificent, if we may use the ex.
pressiou. Thus it will be perceived an
unusual feast is in preparation for the
lovers of music, and an invaluable op-
portunity for instruction to teachers and
leaders as well as members of choirs.-
The extensive musical learning posses-
sed by those who have charge of the
Convention, and who are to lecture on
the various branches of the science, as
well as give instruction by direct prac-
tice in vocal music render them well
fitted for -their responsible office, and
people will come hundreds of miles to
gain the information which could not
otherwise be ‘obtained without spending
much time and labor in reading, study,
and practice. Thclclass which is taken
as a choir, or school, and forms the cho-
rous, usuallylconsists of several liund-
reds, and as the united voices rise togeth-
er the effect is truly grand. It were
well if every one connected with music
could attend this Convention, and thus
learn to sing, that they may better praise
God in His house, and be able to teach
others I more acceptably.
