on the 4th. Hon. Francis Gillette was the
orator of the occasion, and spoke in his usual,
happy manner. A dinner was given, and in
the evening there was an exhibition of fire-
works, from the laboratory oflfiovey & Co., in
Boston. ‘Much interest was excited by the
sword of Gen. Putnam, which was exhibited on
the occasion.

fellow named N. Hubbell, of New York, for
contracting an advertising bill at that oflice
and‘ neglecting to pay. Other papers it is
stated, have also been swindled by him in a
simllarmanner, and the. craft generally are

time they are requested to give him that no-
toriety which his conduct deserves and the
rules of the Association require.

"The Prohibitory Liquor Law was
dead before it was born" said a French
paper of this city. There was truth in
the sneer. Eight days have past and in
no equal time Within the last three
years have retailers made a more flaun-
ting exposition of the Alcoholic tempta-
tions, nor have there been more cases of
drunkenness. All matters to which
the law relates are mixed up in a hedge
podge of inextricable confusion. So
manypoints are unsettled, and so many
cunning objections raised to well nigh
every feature of the law, that it lies

crowds at the Crystal Palace.
The American Institute hold their
fair in October next, when _Mr. John
Randall, Jr., will exhibit a specimen of
his elematic Railway, which will carry
passengers round a circuit 1-5th of a
mile in length. This elevated Railway
was proposed more than a year ago by
him to extend around the eutile city.—-
Sir Joseph Paxton has proposed the same
thing for the city of London. Like
many other inventions which prove to
be of vast utility this will no doubt
come into general use.
To a mirth-loving man the advent of a
truly humorous book into some sunny
year of his life is really an "event to be
talked of. Our literature does not fur-
nish us with many such now-a-days, and
for that very reason I suppose, I enjoyed

Washington, Franklin, J elferson, Luther
Cromwell and Jackson. Their power-
ful intellects compelled the, world to ad-
mire them. "
The genius of the present age‘ is Dis-
COVERY. In the progress of the arts and
sciences, this age is immeasurably superi-
or to any’ former one. The present cen-
tury stands preeminent for its wonder-
ful discoveries in the sciences and arts.
Among these, the noble science of Med-
stretched along the city like an effete
corpse. Many new drinking saloons
have been opened since the 4th, and all
the old ones are in full blast. The ef-
forts of the police are confined almost
exclusively to capturing reeling bipeds
‘who have secreted too much of the
contraband between decks, of whom
somé"tb_irty have "tasted the sweets” of
corrected liberty in the calaboose within
the last ten days. In most cases they
are too drunk to give straight testimony,
as to where they procuréd their liquor,
and after poulticing galled justice with
a "saw-buck,” are set at liberty again.
The first Jury trial in the State came
off nt'Poughkeepsie yesterday. The de-
fendant was a Dutchman and his crime
was sailing Lager Bier. I-Ie aimed to
prov: it was not intoxicating,
this end ssmall Dutchman after being
duly sworn, testified and said that he
had in twelve hours drank sixty glasses
of Lager Bier, and that the glasses were
pint glasses and that ‘he did experience
no inconvenience from the same? And
yet that jury found the vendor guilty.-

The steady march of improvement
which prostrate: everything before its
gigantic tread, has worked a great
change in the last fortress of the old
Knickerbockers. Castle Garden is now an
-emigrant hospital. Every interior portion
of the old building is so thoroughly meta-
morphoscdrthat its most constant frequen-
tor of the last five years,'can find no clue
by which to recognize it.‘ It awakens "a
feeling of real sadness to stroll through the
precincts of the pile known for so many
years an hall of pleasure, and consecrat-,
ad to the Muse of Song, and see how it
has now almost entirely lost its identity
and become anotherlink in the great chain
of benevolent institutions which the spirit
of the age is forging. ‘All its glories (if
we may call its associations with art by

it is to perform its part in the utilitarian -
conomy of its times. The arrangements
fitting it for the new use which is to be
made of it are most extensive and com-
plele. The utmost precaution is taken by

Encouraged doubtless by the success
of the "Baby Show,” which everybody
lgughed, railed and howled at, and then
paida quarter to see, Barnum has plan-

fully showeth :——That he is lawful Guardian to

Minors belonging to said District, and that
said Minors are the owners of an undivided in-
terest in the following Real Estate, viz : a cer-
tain tract of land lying in the town of Darien,
in the County of Fairfield, and State of Con-
necticut, in quantity twelve acres, more or
less, bounded Northerly by land of RufusHoyt
and land of Isaac Hoyt, Easterly by Highway,
Southerly by land occupied by Sarah Percival
and land of Charles Hoyt, and Westerly by
land of Charles Hoyt and land of Isaac Hoyt.‘
And he further says, That the Estate is at pres-
ent unproductive, that the avails thereof are
wanted for the support, maintenance and edu-
cation of said Minors, and that it will be for the
