The Legislature says the Maine Law
Advocate has done good thing in the
passage ofa Dog "Law, that will to some
considerable extent rid the State, espe-
cially cities of thcnow super abundance
of worthless specimens of the canine
race that annoy every one but their mas-
ters. The law provides that every dog
shall be registered by the owner in the
Town Clerk’s Office, under penalty of
$3 fine for neglecting to do so, the mon-
ey thus collected to constitute “The Dog
Fund,” out of which is to be paid dama-
ges done to Owners of sheep killed by
dogs. Every dog registered as above,
to wear a collar with the number of its
register, and the owners name marked
thereon. An annual tax of $1, to be
paid upon all male, and $5, upon all fe-
male dogs. Any dog appearing without
the collar, &.c., signifying the law has
not been complied with, may be lawful-
ly killed by any person who chooses to
do so.
Those who value their canine favor-
ites enough to comply with the law,
will have a security of protection not be-
fore enjoyed. Those who do not will
most likely find some one kind enough
to relieve them, and the public. ofa worth-
less pest.

preparation a new Steamboat Directory,
which will be issued in October next, the
book will contain over two hundred pages,
illustrated in the best s~tyle,and neatly bound
in a durable manner It will be one of the
most interesting Books ever published, and
will be a book that will be interesting to all
classes of people. The Steamboat Directory
will contain ii complete list and description
of‘ all the Steambouts now afloat in the Wes-
tern und Southern waters. The length, mod-
cl, speed, power and tonnage of each boat,
where and by whom built, the name ofthe
boat with the trade “she is in: Also, the
names of Captains and officers, her age, doc.
The Directory will contain a History of steam-
bonts and Steamboating on the Western wa-
ters since the application of steam; also 0.
sketch of the first boat built for the Ohio riv-
er, with the name of the builder, commander
and owner.
The River Directory will contain a list and
description of all the Steamboat Disasters
that have occurred on the Western and Son-
thern waters beautifully illustrated with a

Western and Southern waters. The Directo-
ry will contain Maps of the Ohio. Missouri,
Illinois, Arkansas, White. Red, Ouachita, Yn-

many other River and Commercial items of
interest to the people at large. The book
will contain the cards of the various U. S,
Mail Boats, with the trade they are in, &.c.—
The Directory will also contain a complete
list of all the responsible Steamboat Licensed
Ofiicers, their places of residence, &c., the new

merits, showing wherein it benefits the incom-
petent officer, and injure: the competent oili-
cer, &c., and all the important U. S. Supreme

The Directory will be illustrated in the best
style. and printed in the best manner. The
author has for six yeo'rs ' been gathering to-

numerous steamboat discs-ers on the Western
and Southern waters, and now intends pub-
lishing them-in book form. The price of the
workwill be put at the low sum of 31. Ten
thousand copies will be issued for the boat-
mea, all others desiroué of subscribing will
have to do so at once, as none will be printed
unless ordered in‘ advance. The work is des-
tined to have acirculation of over 80,000 cop-
