old Jay farm, in Bedfori
There were ten machines entered for
trial, which was advertised-to commence
onthe farm of the President of the So- .
niety at 1 o’clock,_and as a feature of
pii‘rictuaLlit}' it did commence within half
an‘ hour of the time- There was a
large -number of farmers present-—we
ialiould judge full three . hundred at one
time. We noticed Col. Johnson, Sec-
retary of the State Agricultural Society
present with his note.-book ; also Col.
Lewis G. Morris late President of the
State Society, Judge, Jay and his son
John, and others from every part of tire
County. The arrangements were made
and carried out by Mr. Dickenson, Pres-
ident, and Henry Keeler, Secretary of
the‘ County Society, in the most perfect
m'snner—-keeping a large crowd of anx-
ions spectators in most perfect order and
in-the. very best humor. The day ~.-.—as

lot selected was srnootli, covered *7:-‘llll
a short growth of thick red-top grass
not '-half grown. The swaths were
cut down hill with the wind, and were
about twenty rods long. Each machine
out two swaths with the same pair of

following order :
N0. 1. Ketchumls patent, entered by
himself, is an iron frame, double geared,
has no wheel but the driving one, cuts a
swath 43} feet wide, and makes 36 cuts
in moving forward 9 feet. The cutters
are 3 1-4 inches long, somewhat resem-
bling large saw teeth, worked by a short
crank through gilideswso that the cut is
that of shears. This machine cuts a
smooth swath and spreads the grass
Well. This was the first machine tried.
It is an old favorite witli the public and
with this meeting. ’
No. 3. Riissell’s-—"\F-food frame with
wheels in addition to tliedriving wheel,
‘-iP°.B.."VhiGh it ‘.ca__u elevated by a
slight movement of I a lever, so as to
travel without‘ cutting. This ‘machine
has a cam ‘motion whichvis said to work
well in heavy grain. It did not do as
good W,orlr"i.n this grass as other ma-
chines. It weighs 700 lbs, cuts-4 1-2
feet,-32.cutsin 9 feet. It was entered
by Platt, agent for Pease of Albany. It
was called the noisy machine.
No. 5. Manny’s right hand and No,
6 Manny’s left hand I’l’l8chlll9..-'=.——‘.he last
Worked with a reel. These machines
are reapereud mower combined, the
weight of mower 750 .lbs.; the mower
and reaper 800 lbs.; cut 41; feet; 28 cuts
in’? 1-2 feet; it is wood" frame, was
made and entered by Adriance :3: Co. of
Boston, who claim some slight improve-
nient. Both of these machines did good
work, and appeared to us to be easier
than either of the preceding ones for the
horses. There is a very‘ simple contri-
vance for elevating the knives.
No.4. Forbusifs mower and reaper,
entered by Griffin of New York; iron
frame 900 lbs. weight; cut 4 1-2 feet;
has a contrivance for throwing it out of
geartand elevating on a wheel to move
from field to field, which is in its favor,
It works easy, but not as well as Ketch-
’-lufs or Manuyls or satisfactory to those
present; but the machine was new and
the grass not favorable for this machine.
No. 7. Hallenbecl:’s of Albany, en-
tered 37 the inventor and manufacturer,
iron and wood frame, weight 500 lbs.;
outs-I 1-2 feet; making 30 cuts in 10
feet. This machine throws out of gear
on the back track. It is single geared
and very simple in construction, and
the price is $105. This was the favorite
of the field, and in our opinion will take
thefirst prize. It works easy and runs
light.
No. 8. In‘-tented by S. Allen of New
Jersey, manufactured and entered by R.
L. Allen of New York. It is a wood
frame, 525 pounds weight, and has a
small Wheel on the left side which sup-
ports‘ the frame in moving about. The
knives are thrown out of gear by a pres-
sure of the foot. In New -Jersey and
Pennsyluania this machine has been in
favor for some years. It has a good rep-
utation as a reaper.
No. 9 was one of Manny’s machines,
manufactured by L. G-. Ball, Hoosic
Falls. It is similar to the others, and
works with a reel, which is an advan-
tage in heavy grass.
No. 10 was a one horse machine made
by Ketchum of Buffalo zhefatlzer of all
the mowing machines. It cuts about 3
feet wide, and does good tvorl-r. with [a
stout horse.
We heard a good many persons say
they could not tell, after seeing all the
machines. work, which to choose. So
far -as we‘ heard observations, Hal1en-
beck’s was the favorite. Our opinion is
that all are good in their proper situa-
tions, and of’ great practical value to the
farmer, and that was the unanimous
opinion of the crowd, many of whom
saw a mowing machine for the first time.

' We doubt whether an Agricultural
meetihg has ever been held in West-
chester County that effected as much
good as this one. It has awakened‘ a
spirit of improvement that will never
sleep, and will save a great deal of la-
bar in future years. Mr. Dickenson is
justly entitled to a. good share of the
credit, as he was very active in getting
up the meeting, and devoting several
acres of grass to the trial, at a time
when the crop was of no value.
' After all the machines had been

equally tried, the President called upon 1- -
Col. Johnson to make a short address to
the peopl_e, which he did in his happiest
style. He strongly illustrated the ad-
vantage of substituting horse power and
machinery for manual labor. He allu.
fled m0SY- happily to the spirit that such
meetings as this awaken in the commu-
nity. It is not the prize that may be
won by either of these mmachines, said
he. that is the great prize of the Exhibi-
tion.

The concord Grape.

Bull’s new and superior Grape, the stock of
which is placed in their hands for sale. This
very remarkable American variety is the‘grea-
test acquisition that has ever yet been made to
our hardy native Grapes, andsnpplies tlie',de'-
sidernturn so long wanted, of a superior table
Grape, sufilciently hardy to withstand the col-
dest climate, and early enough to ripen, its
fruit in any part of the Northern or New En-
gland Statcs. It is four weeks earlier than
the Isabella, about two weeks earlier than the
Diana. It is fully ripe from the 3d tothe 10th

hurdy, with bunches of large‘ size, hand-

and with large roundish oval berries, frequent-
ly measuring an inch in diameter, color very
dark, covered with 9. thick blue bloom, flesh
soft, tender and juicy ; flavor very rich and
luscious, with 8. fine sprightly, aroma. The‘
foliage is large, broad, and thick,’ and the her-
ries have never been known to mildew,_ rot or
drop oil‘ under any circumstances during the
five years since it has borne fruit. Good jud-
ges who have tasted it pronounce it superior
to the Isabella in its ripest condition.

Under date of May 15th, 1854, Professor
Stowe, formerly of Ohio, now of Massachusetts,
well known as an ardent an intelligent friend
of popular education, says :-—
“ I am decidedly in favor ofWebster for the
following reasons, to wit.”
1. Webster is the most uniformly analogi-
cal and self-consistent.
2. His system falls in most completely with
the tendencies of the language; and if in any-
thing he goes beyond present usage it is in the
right direction, and the usage will soon over-
take him.
3. He has present possession of the ground
more than any other one. In the United
States he is the authority, everywhere, except
in Boston, and even there, more thttnany oth-
er one. In England he has more than any
other one, and is continually gaining.
4. He is the great Jimcrican Plzilolagist,
the most learned and devoted scholar in his
special department that the English knows;
and for this reason, other things being equal,
he deserves the preference.
5. If we would have uniformity, we must
adopt Webster, for he cannot be displaced ;
but others may be.”
“It gives me great pleasure -to state that I
have made use eitherof your quarto or octavo
Dictionary, ever since the time of their publi-
cation, and that for copiousness, for exactitude
of defination, and adaptcduess to the present
state of science and literature, they seem to me
