meetings may promote the true interests

Va. The sacred Music Society of that
city, invited Mr. Lowell Mason and my-
self to meet the teachers, choristers and
singers mere, for three days, for purpo-_
sea of improvement in church music. At
the first meeting, which took place in
the lecture room of Dr. Howell’s church
there were three hundred or more in at-
tendance, and what. was most hopeful
for the convention, and encouraging to
the teachers, there were no less than
eigiu‘. pastor.-t, of different denominations,
present, among them some well known
and distingttislied names. After appro-
priate opening exercises, Rev. Dr. Hogs
was chosen president, Rev. Dr. Howell
and Rev. Mr. Reed vice presidents.
But to come to the point of which I
wish more particularly to speak, several
of these pastors were present all or nearly
all our exercises, and their words of en-
couragement and approval gave us new
strength and zeal, "ind made us, as sing-
ers, feel that in A endeavoring better to
prepare ourselves for this part of public
worship, we were engaged in serious and
"important. business. Their presence ten-
ded also to check the inclination thltt, we
must admit, singers are apt to have,
when asssembled together on such occa-
sions, to that music which is merely hu-
morous and amusing and helps us to keep
more closely to the proper objects of the
convention, which were mainly improve-
ment in the knowledge of suitable tunes
and hymns for worship, and instruction
with reference to their style and perfor-
mance. These matters were invested
with a dignity and an importance by the
presence and concurrence of the clergy-
merralluded to, which otherwise they
would not have had; and truths were
received on the subject of church music
which will doubtless have great weight
and influence, not only in Richmond,
but thoughout the South. In conclusion
may I urge upon pastors to take a per-
sonal interest in these gatherings, now,
becoming so common in every part of
the land, and not léave them to become
occasions for low, comic singing and oth-
er buflbonery, degrading alike to the
cause of music and poor human nature.

tention and the most intense interest. The
Lecturer was greeted with frequent -and hear-
ty applause during the delivery of his dis-
course, and at its conclusion the audience
‘complimented him by a vote of thanks.

sameness. A faithful exhibition of his view on
the controversy concerning faithful fersions,
