that one of the Missouri expeditions at
thclatc election, was really a well arm-'

. The practical operation of the pfohib-
itory law in our State has been such
that it has drawn to its support very
many who heretofore opposed it, and I
believe that if the question of its repeal
could be, at this time, directly submitted
to the people of this State, a large ma;
jority would be found in favor of the
law. . Its eﬁ'ecis have been a diminution
of crime and the alleviation of poverty,
and misery. , ‘

Its repeal I should regard as detrimen-
tal to the best interests of our State and
the cause of hnmaniiy.

What is a Fyke? '
A FYKE is a long bag net with from two
to four hoops inside, with a funnel mouth
through which the ﬁsh pass and cannot return.
A wing from 9 to 15 feet long, extends from
each side of the front hoop. The Fyke is used
for taking ﬁsh’ in Sounds, Rivers, Lakes,
Ponds, Creeks, &c.. and is set so that it encom-
passes the ground where,‘ the ﬁsh run, by which
large numbers are taken. They are made of
various sizes, and cost from S2 50 to $20.-—
They are simply constructed. and easily man-
aged, and often pay for themselves at tlie'first
setting. Every person living in a. position
where. they can be used, should have them.-

very remarkable American variety is the grea-
test acquisition that has ever yet been run c to
~our hardy native Grapes, and supplies the de-
si(.emtum so long wanted, of a superior tabla
Gi-ape, suﬁiciently hardy to withstand the col-

fruit in any part of the Northern or cw

gland States. It is four weeks. earlier 'tlI'd'll
the Isabella, about two weeks earlier than the '
Diana. It is fully ripe from the 3d tothe 10th.
cf September. and ﬁne specimens have been
exhibited the last two years, at that date, be-
fore the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. ‘ _

It is a most vigorous growing vine, perfect-' 
lyliardy, with bunches of large size, ‘
somely shouldered, often weighing is pound,
and with large rouiidish oval berries, frequent- _
ly measuring an inrh in diameter, color vs 7
dark,‘ covered with st thick blue bloom, ﬂex
soft, tender and juicy ; ﬂavor very rich and
luscious, with a fine sprightly aroma. The
foliage is large, broad, and thick, and the her-
ries have never been known to mildew, rotor
drop off under any circumstances during the
ﬁve years since it has borne fruit. Good jud-
gcs who have tasted it pronounce it superior
to the Isabella in its ripest condition.
