The trial of the Steam Fire Engine for
the Boston Fire Department, took place
to-day in front of the City f-1a1;_ in the
presence of some ten thousand person.-.
Its. performance was generally highly
satisfactory, although some firemen man.
aged to beat it in lieiglit-«mi; one of the
old machines. '
In the celebrated case of Fry against
Bennet, in which the former was awar-
ded ten thousand dollars damages, for al-
leged libel in the Herald, the Superior
Court today ordered a new trial. And
in the same Court to-day, judgment was
given against Alexander Kyle, Jr-., for
3260.560, being the par value of the
Stock in the Harlem Railroad, fraudu-
lently issued by him.
The matter of the N. Y. Times, on it
summons for contempt of Court, came
up in the Marine Court to-day, but ow.
ing to the shortness of the notice given
the case was postponed till next. week.
. Hat Shop Burnt.-—Thc hat manufac-
turing establishing occupied by Johnson
dc Signor, in the "New City" district,
was, together with its contents, destroy-
ed by fire, on Sunday night. As the
flames were first discovered in ii portion
of the building used as a storage room,
where fire was not any time used, there
is no doubt of its havingbeen kindled by

thing over one hundred dozen hats com-
pleted and boxed for market.
The loss, on building and stock, we
understand, is estimated, at about $3,-
700, on which there was an insurance of
$2,700,-—Dcmbury Times.

ventive genius, not only over that of our
English progenitors, but indeed of all
other nations-has become too tangible to
be disputed, It \vas notorious at the
World's Fair in London, that the Amer-
icans far outstriped all others in the use-
ftil inventions which they supplied. We
beat the English in vessels, railroads,
lelegraphs and manufacturers by power.
VVe are beating them in thc scientific
arts of chemistry and Medicines, as we
have long beat the rest of mankind. A
new and practical proof of this assertion
is shown in the tact that the principle
remedies of the allied armies of the East
are furnished from the laboratory of our
countrymen. Da. J. C. Ann: of Low-
ell is filling orders for immense quantities
of his Ckerry Pectoral and Cazlzarzic
Pills, for both the land and sea forces in
Turkey. His medicines have been tried
and approved by those in power who
have found tnem the most reliable which
they could procure for the exegencies in
which they are to be employed.

Suggestion to Farmers.
The New York Tribune says that all
we need is a favorable crop of breadstuffs
next season, to place the country inde-
pendent of Europe, and that all the en-
ergies of our farmers should be directed
to placing as large a breadth of land as
possible under crops, as Europe will need
all we can raise next year.
This is a good suggestion, and due rip-
on which the farmers of this country
need not fe at to act. The past has been
a disastrous year in more respects than
one. The partial failure of the grain
crops, however, is undoubtedly a great
cause of the prevailing “hard times"-—
and heavy crops which will doubtless
command good prices, are needed to re-
ceive good credit and restore confidence
to the country. ' ' ‘
Hezwy Sa.les._—-The following laugh-
able incident is related in the ‘City Items’
of the Journal of Commerce, of Friday:
Mr. John P. Beanville, a French im-
porting merchant, doing business at No.
160 Water Street, who for the past three
weeks has been afliicted with partial de-
rangement. of the mind, yesterday called
at the store of Mr. Combes, in Grand-st.
and stated that he wanted to purchase
the goods then in the store for shipment
to the West Indies -His manner and
conversation were such. as to excite sus-
picions of his being mentally deranged,
and officers Mead and Hays, of the 10th
Ward, were called in and conveyed him
before Justice W'ood, who caused him
to be examined by a physician, and he
was soon, pronounced to be insane. In-
quirieswere tlien instituted-for the pur-
pose of ascertaining whether he had pur-
sued a‘ similar course with other mercan-
rilo firms, when it was ascertained that
he had purchased $39,440 worth of goods
from Messrs. Ward 85 Knapp; $16,.
764 worth of P. L. Rogers, of Fulton-st.
$17,000. worth of J. Small & Co., and
various other bills, amounting to in all,
$112,471. Besides these, there are,
doubtless, other firms that have sold large

Spunky —-The St. Louis Republican
says. that a few days ago a man and his
wife in that city, were engaged in arran-
ging a separation. The principal diffi-
culty was the baby which the woman

husband's arms, and exclaimed, “Take

ly 27, in the presence of a large number
of Europeans and natives. A missiona-

will, to behold the foundation of a build-
ing set apart for a Christian mission, the

a Minor belonging to said District, and that said
Minor is the owner of an undivided one ninth
part of the following Real Estate, viz : a. cer-
tain tract of land lying in Wilton in said Dis-

bounded Northerly by heirs of Samuel and Su-
