improving by two or three per cent. per

commercial world will attain to its for-

“The Poor-”

Mn. EDITOR :——My friend “Beii”ap-
pears again in the Gazette of last, week,
I would say to you, in confidence, that I
think him to be a little “greeii,” or to
speak charitably a little “gi'ee:i-2'.rli.,” but
it might not he considered quite lionora-
ble in controversy, and so 1 will let it
pass. Only just think of it. He sup-
poses that /iis article in reference to “the
poo?’ has created such a sensation among
the good folks in this vicinity ! La me!
"the good folks” never thought the arti-
cle of sufficient importance to notice it,
and even I, a poor outsider, only noticed
it for the sake of Ben himself, he sceni-
e_d so much distressed about the poor
professedly, but in reality about: .the
Church. But hear friend Ben 21 little
further.

The "Comic ex-brother says he never
would have resorted to the expedient he
did, to provide for his family, had he re-
ceived assistance from the -Church."—
Now Grandmother and Aunt Sally both
Say he did receive assistance from the
Church, and that his resort to the expe-
dient of dancing is notorious. Here is a
palpable mis-statement on the part of
friend Ben or the ex-brother, for there
can be no mistake in the statement of
Grandmother and Aunt Sally, for I tell
you they are dear praying souls if they
are my relation.

But, Mr. Editor, it beats all natur
with what a perfect avalanche he comes
down on the church in the following :-

“1\‘lr. Comic seems to think that if ser-
ving the Devil :1 little in Comic Concerts

will keep his family from starving, that
it is better than to serve the Devil by re-
maining with those who would let his
family starve.” . :

To remain in such a church would be
servingtlie'Devil in the estimation of

Ben.

At first thouglit this almost gave

me fits,’ but on the ‘,‘SeCOlld, sober whom 9,671 are FOREIGNERS’and
thought, ’Iperceived friend Ben does of these 7,640 came from Ireland and

“medium.” Now if you please, Mr.

Editor, allow me a few words to my old
friend.

It is all nonsense, Ben, for yoti to in-

vite me to take part in :1 Comic perfor-
mance because ‘it is small business, an 1
besides you advise me “not to fall in 0

error.” I admire your wonderful sag:ic-
ity in perceiving my mistakéin deferring
helping the poor till “the cold weather
and hard times are over,” and your faith-
fulness in pointing it out tome, and to
show you that your labor is not in vain,
Iwill say for your encouragement that
my wife and sister have been by your
last artic3e “provoked to good works,”
and they propose to me that if I will
stop chewing and smoking, they will
quit 'he use of opt}./.77z., This is to men
perfect god-send. Now I’m screwing
myself up to the sticking point, and as
soon as I can get my resolution up to
the scratch, I mean to accept the prop-
osition. 1 tell you seriously, this opium
grinding‘ is bad business, and I will say
it to you privately, it is the reason why

people will get. up a prohibitory law
against the sale of opium, I’ll go ‘itstrong.
