below that of any other. The burden is thus
divided among all; and as all are bencfitted
by preventing any one from growing up in ig-
norance, so should all share in the cost of edu-
cating him.

hope they will do so, thoroughly and complete
ly, for then we may expect just and culiglltcxi-'
ed views on free education, to prevail among

to Christianity in the Western Empire,
consisted chiefly of the middle classes in
the towns. The agricultural population
