please the eye, and gratify the curiosity
of those, who, like myself, have ever
desired to behold the beauties of the
great Vfest.

Iowa is, without doubt, the state ofall
others. Altliougli Illinois is considered
by many to be inferior to none, yet I
think that a candid, iitipartial man, after
having travelled in both States, if he
speak his honest convictions will give
the preference to Iowa. The land in
some parts of Illinois is richer than in
this State, but should you see farmers
hauling their manure into sotne deep
ravine to get it out of their way, you
would most likely conclude that the
soil was rich enough for -‘ practical pur-
poses.” This I have seen frequently;
in fact, I do not know of an instance
where a farmer has spread manure upon
his fields. The soil is from one to three
feet deep, and so fertile that com may be
raised fifteen or twenty years in succes-
sion. I saw a piece of land in Iilinois
that had produced ciglttcen good crops
of corn in as iiiairy years, and the land.
to all appearance was capable of “ doing
the satire thing over again.” I imagine
that time will prove Iowa to be not far
behind this. W'_lien we take into con-
sideration the price of such lands in Il-
linois: and Iowa, the buyer would be
pretty likely to cross the Mississippi, and
“set. stakes” in one of the most
beaiitiful states in the Union. There

which Iowa are free. The greatest is
impure water, a scarcity of timber and
in some parts of the State large tracts
of waste. laird which render it unlienltliy.
The water in Iowa is pure and good; of
timber we have a good supply, (although
in places it is not equally distributed,)
and most of the land is capable of culti-
vation. IVe have ilie Mississippi on the
East, the Missouri on the “fest, and tl.e
Des I\"I.0il1C‘.":‘ i'rriri'iiiig into the interior,arid
for lesser rivers, creeks and streams, one
glance at the map is snflicicnt to con-
vince any ordiuarv mind that Iowa, for
agricultural purposes, cainrot be surpas-

hor:-:e”as yet to draw out produce to

market, or convey us and our friends
that come into the State, from point; to
point, but they are on their way, and
will soon cross the Mississippi, and as
they are ever impatient at standing, we
shall soon hear their “suortings” upon
the bluffs of the Missouri.

Coal is foinid in abundance in many
places, and of a very good quality.—
Stone is also found in many places, but
there are some countries that lack this
material. A great excitement has been
caused by the discovery of gold in Har-
din county, but very small quantities
have yet been found.

The emigration to this State during
the Spring months, was immense, the
different Land Ollices being so thronged
that many could not obtain admittance.
It is now tnore quiet, but there will
probably be a greater rush to this State
in the fall, than ever before,and those
wlru wish to purchase land in Iowa can
not come too soon. Now is a much bet.
ter time than six iiiontlis hence, as near-
lyjivc 7)lilZi0)2s of acres comes into mar-
ket. in August and September. The
most of these lands are in the western
part of the State, and are bought at the
Governinent ollices at Fort des Moines
and Kancsvillc. They are ptit up at
auction for two weeks, after \v_hicli the
rcmairideris subject to entry at $125 per
acre. A very small part of this large
quantity will be sold at auction. Prob-

choice locations of prairie.

About two weeks since, on my return
from a tour toward the northern part of
the State, I nit-ta company of Sioux,
who were linnting a party of M0squuw-
kas. These Il'll)l’.S are constantly quar-
reliiig, and it appears that while the
Sioux were otrt hunting, the Mosqua\v-
kas came to their cauip and murdered
some of their sqrnws and children, and
the Sioux were after tlicur with their
guns and rifles, each one having a piece
of raw hide ten or twelve feet long, for
the purpose of tying the enemy when
captured. But they could not get_ on
the trail, and had to return without sat-
