The Sons of Temperance at: New Lon-
don. had a festive gatlicring on Wellflnesday, in
which alargc number of their brol liren from
this state and Rbode Island particip atcd. The
exercises were to have commenced at 10$ A.
M. but were somewhat delayed to allow the
New Londoners time to elect a 'I'empera.nce
Mayor, which they accoinplislicd very thor-
oughly by half past 11—H. I’. Huven, thor-
oughly Maine Law, beating A. C. .Lippit, the
incumbe11t,by over 200 majority. A procession
had been by this time formed at the Sons’
Hall, which marched thence through the priii-
cipal streets and to a fine grove a mile north of
Notice.
We have upon our Books a large ninnbcr of
unpaid transient advertising Bills. We have
made very heavy outlays for a Power_ Press and
for new type, and we need these little sums
verv much. Will not those concerned please
settle them up without furtlier delay, and much

The Sons of Temperance constitute the prin-
cipal nucleus around which temperance men
1-any at the present time, and are undoubtedly
the most efiicient teniperunce Orgalllzfltloll in
existence.
In this town. as well as many others 111 this
, stare, they are the only eflicicnt working tem-
perance orgaiiizatioii. And they are unques-
tionably doing a great work outside of their
own imincdiatc lsinits. The Division in this
mini embraces the most active, thorough-going
temperance men in the community, and are
constantly adding to their numbers.
The growth of the Order of the Sons of Tem-V
peraucc in this country is almost without prec-
edent in point of numbers. Every state in this
great Union now has its Grand and Subordi-
nate Divisions. It is spreading among the In-
dian tribes at the West, and numbers its thou-
sands in the British Provinces of North Ameri-
' ca. It is also spreading in Europe, and has
become a grand fulcrum with which to move
the masses of the Old World, upon this subject.
It is distributing thousands of dollars annu-
ally by way of sick benefits, and blessing the
world with the genial influences of benevolence
and philanthropy. And the establishment and
« growth of this order in any community cannot
fail to exert a salutary and benign influence.
It is in fact a pledge of good citizenship, giving
greater security to person, property and
morals. *

The First Trip to Sea.
I was one of the number who left in
the sloop James Morgan last Tuesday in
a pleasure excursion. The weather was
fine, and as she glided down our bay
shouts and hurrahs greeted us from the
shore and from the niimerolls little boats
which lined the harbor. As she arrived
at the draw-bridge at South Norwalk, it
being time for the morning up train on
the New York and New Haven Rail-
road, the draw was kept c,-losed till it
had passed over, when she a ain started
on her expedition. The Vlllld favored
us and our craft plowed l.lll'(' gh the wa-
ter at quite a rapid rate. As we ap-
proached oiir place of destination the
.\V:,iI1rl began to die away, until finally we
had scarcelya breatli of iirio fill our
sails. During our voyage aei'oss ihe
Sound, we saw nothing l‘.:‘Il1:~ll‘l{'.1llll3, nu-

we saw some half-dozen porpoises, dash-
ing through the water some 20 rods from
us. I/Ve had on board refresf,iments
of all kinds but Rum. I believe, there
was none of thatexcepting a slylbottle
kept under the bowsprit of the vessel
and secured with a string. To thi place
three of the sailors went quite 0 en to

rations." At about half past two ’c1’k
we landed at Eaton’s Neck, nea the
Huntington Bay, where most of th gen-
tlemen and ladies went off in sea ll of

surprised on Tliursduy week, by the appearance of a band
of youthful soldiers, members ofthc Ilaubury Institute,
in regular iuilitary uniform. consistiiig of blue coats and
cups, white pants, and armed and equipcd in true milita-
ry style, with belts, c'.~.rfridgc boxes, &c., and real shoot-
ers and lJ:l_V0l1L‘1S of the United States Cadet pattern, of
proportional size and weiglit. After landing from the
cars and resting for a few moments, they furincd in front
of the Hotel and went thruugli their evolutions, counter-
marching and manual of arms; with great accuracy and

larger g1‘0\V'l‘.ll-—l.L‘:‘«S like juveniles than like disciplined
troops of the line. In parading througli our principal
tlioroughfarcs in the morning and afternoon to the music
ofour best band and with flying colors, not an irregular-
ity or inisfalte could be detected in any movement, that
would not have done credit to our best city coinpnnies.
Those ofthc spectators who have had the largest experi-
ence in military matters, say that they have never met
with greater perfection in a military drill.
After taking up their quarters for the night, and doing
military duty in the afternoon and evening, tlic-ypi~ocop¢1.
ed on their excursion for sea bathing to Smithis Island.
The enthusiasm which this, their first niilitary appear-
ance, created amongst our citizens generally and the
ladies particiilarly, will not be forgotten, and ma_v assiirc
the enterprising proprietor of the School (Rev. E. S.
Scheuk) that his modesty in giving no public notice or
programme of his intended visit was superfluous. It
would have been gratifying to the public, more exten-
sively to have witnessed the brilliant success ofliis .~‘cl100l-

We understand that military aml gyinuastic exercises
are daily taught by an eminent professor of these arts,
appointed for this department,and a re used onlyfor health-
ful recreation from more important studies. With 6 teach-
ers for Ancient and Modern I.:iiigu.iges, Matliematics, Mu-
sic, Drawing, Painting, &c., this School appears to stand
foremost amongst siniilarinstitutions in the State. The
enterprising gentleman at the head oftliis School shows
a liberality of plan and dc-vntedncss to his work, which
must place him in the front rank of his profession.-

Abandoned Schooner.
J2 Delaware schooner recently entered our
