A New Invention.
One of the handsomest sticks of pine
timber ever seen in Detroit was bought
in Lapeer county lately. It was ninety
feet long three feet and six inches in di-
ameter at the butt, and but 16 inches
at the top end and straight as an arrow.
VVhile a number of citizens were inspec.
ting it, one of them observed it would
be a grand thing to dress and send it to

The Naugatuck Rail Road Company
have just put seine splendid new cars
upon the Express Train and adapted
them to the improved ventilating process
tested by several rather imperfect trials
by the inventor late last season; Mr.
VVaterbuay is now associated with Mr.
Atwood a most ingenios mechanic, who,
encouraged by the Directors, have con-
sequently been permitted to give their
invention afair and practical trial, and
their triumph is complete. It’s general
outline is this : “The passenger cars of
of a train are all thrown into one long
saloon by means of a flexible cloth or rub-
ber platform, and the windows being
kept closed, and the train opened at the
rear, a strong current of air is received
just over the engine, through a pipe or
bag as wide as the train, and sc me six to
twelve inches deep, which yasses in at
the top of the front car, and so along,
through all the cars, and out at the rear.’
We went overgtlie Read from our sta-
tion to Derby, on Tuesday afternoon, and
though the air was sultry, and the dust
outside so thick that iii the rear the track
was invisible at times, not a particle got
admission inside; while a gentle breeze
played through the whole length of the
train, imparting a freshness and coolness
to the atmosphere as pure as the open
air. All on board (and the cars were
full,) were transported with delight. In
addition to the exclusion of the dust, and
the smoke of Ike engine, the free circu-
lation of a r, &.c., there is somethine;
cheerful and social in having an er},-
range through the whole vast salooiiz
and then. the perfect safety even for
children in passing from arie cor to lllt-,
other, is no small consideration. In con.
clusion, we have tried the invcntiniis of
Mr. Hayne and others, but they hear no
coniparison to the one lllILlt'l' i:oii.-iilci';i-
tion. The thing speaks for it-i-ll_.aii:_l
when generally known will, no doubt,
