Worth, Esq.,Indiana, (formerly of Hatrtfurd,)
recently delivered a lecture in that city, on
“Agriculture at the West,‘-’ which sliows the i
surprising fertility ofthe soil in Indiana.
He ‘spoke of the lzirge aiiioiint of agricul-
tural products raised in Iiitliaiia, and the low
prices of produce. Butter '.her'e sells for 4
and 6 cents perponnd, such as would bring
"25 in New York city; chickens 75 cents
per dozen ; turkies 25 cents each. He
spoke of the variouskiiids of fences used,
antlshowed a model of one which be consid-
ered the best, which cost but $110 per mile,
and could be taken up and easily moved at
pleasure. Houses two stories high 18 by
-20 felet, were put up there on contract for
$110 eac_h,.atid painted with a cheap paint
made of tallow, lime,’&.c., for 22 doilacrs.
He could raise corn in Indiana for five ‘cents
a bushel, and a smart young man could
cultivate and take care of 40 acres alone.
In plowing, they do not hold the plough,
but set in the soil and draw it along trom
two wheels. Forms are rented out for One‘
third of their produce." No manure is used
on the soil—it wouldnot pay the trouble
of carting it. He said that cows were
worked there as well as oxen, to a good ad-
