long time before that Plank Road stock will be

gitimate outlet of New Canaan. and is, or otiglit
to be. but lialfthe distance to Stamford, aml a
litt'e cultivation ofthe betterigraces, will forever
retain her trade to us. Bcsidestlienatiuul facil-
ities offered by Norwalk cver Staniford to New
Canaan people, the completion ofthe Danbury
Railroad, which is near at hand, will be anoth-
er reason why this ihatter should not be lost
sight of. The expenditure of a few hundred
dollars would soon place the route forever at
rest. and we do hope that the means may be
voted by town meeting or otlierwisfa for the

Diabolical Outrage.

charge of illicit and forcible intercourse with two
of his own daughters! One a girl of eleven
years and the other about sixteen, who testify
that the brutal monster has repeated his fiend-

ened them with death if they exposed hiiii.—
Rum is said to be the cause of his shocking

Stratford, near \Vashingtoll Bridge, was des-

are gratified to see so many cheering evidences on
the part of our citizens to meet it. VVe are des-
tined to becomeii " great place” almost in spite of
"ourselves. Nature has done everything for us.

our moiety of enterprise and public spirit shall again

Fatal Accident.
Willitiia‘ s. Stoddard, overseer of the Wilton
section on the Dalibury railroad, while engaged in
blasting, on Tlmrsdry, was fatally injured by a pre-
mature discharge. He lingered along until Sunday
‘when death put an end to his sufferings. He was
"aged 35 y ears.

American Demosthenes at the capital of our
country. he was illustrating our national char-

Ah old lumbering German oniiiibus might;
have been seen early on the morning of the
4th, loaviiig lhe door of the “Hotel dcl ‘Emile
dior,” in the old city of Bean on the Rhine.—
This omnibus in addition to the usual number
of Germans, contained six live Americans, of
which number was your humble servant, all in-
tent on reaching the wharf, from which we
were about to embark on a steamer to ascend
the Rhine. and all equally intent upon celebra-
ting iii some mniiiei', we knew not how, the
anniversary of American independence. Our
party consisted of an equal number of ladies
and gentlemen. \Vlien we reached the wharf
the “ Dampsscliifller" 'or in common English
the steamboat had not yet arrived from below,
but was momenla'rily expected. \-Vbilewuiting
‘our attention was attracted to the novel motive
power employed to propel fP.l'l‘V boats across
the river. A buoy was anchored up the stream
at a distance of about half a mile from each
ferry station, to which was fastened a rope,tllé
ctlier end being attached to the ferry boat.-
The current of the river being rapid-, its force,
by as kilful management ofthe lielin,isbrought.
to bear upon the boat in such a manner as to
carry it rapidly to the opposite side of the riv-
er, describing a semi circle in its progress.—
The return is accomplished in the same inali-
ner. Peasants were crossing on the boats,
bringing to market in baskets on their backs,
vegetables, butter, egg‘ live chickens, &c.——-
We foundliere two young men from Kentucky
who, like ourselves, were wailing to embark on

worse for wear, in fact our lirst impressions of

becoming acquainted with tlieni,we ‘ilstiertained
that they had been educated in one of our Col-
leg-es, that they were on a pedestrian tour
through Germany ; and in fact that their out-
side appearance was no criterion by which they
could be judged.
The steamer at length hove in sight and we
were soon on board. Its size was about that
of our smill sized boats. It had but a single
deck. which was entirc‘ly 'exposed to the
weather. Small tables were placed t.lle‘reon,
around some of which liouest looking Germans
were taking their morning cup of coffee. \Ve
soon left the wliaif and moved up the river‘ at.
a rapid ‘sale. The Dracliinfells which were
dimly discernable from Boltn, became more
distinct in the vision. and soon towered above
us casting their shadows over the placid waters
of the. Rhine. But we were Americans, and
were bound to celebrate the 4th of July, and
we now began to look around us to discover qie
best manner of so doing-. \Ve soon found
the 50 or 60 passengers, several other Ameri-
cans, whose acquaintance we were not long in
makiiig, and upon coiirlting. we were thirteen
in all, an appropriate number for the occasion.

The broad face of bill‘ Captain was lighted
up with enlliusiasm; he expressed himself
ready to assist us in any way in his power.—-
‘Wé risked, had he an American flag on board
the craft. “ No, he had not, but he‘ had a flag
with an eagle on it”—he immediately ordered
it to be run up—it was the Prussian eagle, a
black one to be sure, but better than none. And
now lhe question came, lliid we the niealis of
firing salutes, for what is a 4th of July without
the burning of gunpowder. H eie our Cap-
tain was again in a quandary. He had two
small ‘gulls forward. but he had no powder; At
the next landing however, he sent on shore and
piircliased:_some, which he would not allow us
to pay for.
On board these steamers the passengers dine
on deck at a table spread lengtliwise the boat.
As the dinner hour approached, we ascertained
that a separate side-table was in preparation
for us Aniericans, we‘ immediately iltvited our
friend the Captain to dine with us. and at the
hour of 1, took our seats‘ at the table in the
open air, and there We drank the toast of “the”
day we‘ celebrate,” and many olhers—also to
the ineti‘ioi"y of \Vasliington ; the Hetiiitiful
scenery passing in panoramic view before us.
The two cannons were madeto do their duty.
Many an old ruined castle, and even the strong
fortress of Elirenbreitste‘in itself were itiade
to solid back echoes in honor of freedom and
Yankee doodle. The other p‘zissengei's look
quite an iuterestin the celebration, making
many inquiries about it, and witli‘ the exception
of two or three‘ Englishmen, all seemed well
pleased. At about; 6 in the afteriioon we
reached Ble‘btalricli, where the Aniericitn pas-
sengers all left the boat. for the purpose of pro-
ceeding to this place. As she left the wharf to
continile her course up the river we gave her
three cheers, vvhicli were promptly answered
from the boat by the Germans. Previous to
landing we held a trte‘et.ing in the Cabin. at
which we passed a few resolutions,~ thanking
