‘Vb learn that the barn of Mr. Rufus Say-
1ncui' of Riiigefield was entirely consumed,
with some tons of ‘hay, on Monday, while he
was lying illiand unable to arrest the flames,
which we are told could have easily been ex-
tinguished when first discovered. It is suppos-
‘ed to have been set on lire by his little son, :1
boy-only 3 years of age, who was knowii_ to have
-been playing with a box of '-matclies in the barn
«at short time previous. Our common friction
matches should never be :placed wit~liiin the
reac-li of children, for aside from the daiigers of
combustion, they are a deadly poison, and the
lfrequcnt cause of death among children.
Accident in New Canaan.
\Ve rogri t to learn that Mr. Andrew Bene-
-dict of New Canaan met with a serious accident
on Tuesday last, in consequence of some of
his wagoii gearing giving way as he was de-
scending the hill near the residence of He-zron
L. Ayres. Esq , by reason of which lie was
thrown from his carriage and severely bruised.
“/6 are glad to learn that his injuries are fast
yielding to rcstoratives and his well known ro-
cupeiiitive energies. It is hard to kill such
men as our friend Benedict, and it.is well for
our world that it is so.
Potatoe Rot.
\Ve ai'e told that: this disease has made its
appearance in some few instances about Ridge-
field, but that in the main this valuable esculent
is free from the rot. Otliei' crops probably
never looked better in these parts; of grass es-
pecially we do ‘not remember to have seen such
heavy yields.
Sudden Death.
Mr. Ebenezer T. Treadwell, a respectable
farmer of \Veston, was taken suddenly ill with
dysentery on Thursday last while in his
meadow mowing, and before Friday morning
was a corpse, his disease refusing to yield to
medical skill.

large crowd collected, to see what was to be

grave,” says a third. “Open it,” repeated

forwarded to meet the demand; Various tu-
mors were afloat in the street in regtlrd to
this inatter,-one stating that the demand was
for $200,000, and that the Albany Banks
