The causes which led to this lamentable trage-
dy are that Riley had privately married the
dauglitei' of Gonlding, which was the means of
a serious misunderstanding between them.
The daughter was brought home and her falli-
er left his family only this morning, supposing
that all was safe. The old man left his son—iu-
law shaving. A short time after his absence,he
seized a knife and commenced the bloody ori-
slaught. The parties are of the poorer classof
scciety.

lished in Albany, New York, on a very liberal
scale. It is proposed that it shall consist; of
three colleges, schools. or faculties: 1st, M ed-
cine; 2nd, Law; 3rd. the Natural and Ap-
plied Sciences. In this last school or faculty
it is proposes to embrace the Principles and
I Practice of Agriculture.

two young ladies, one named Cobb, belonging
in Clinton. and the other a cousin of Miss
C., avisitor, went out sailing in Clinton IIar'-

a sudden flaw of wind struck the boat, and cap-
sized ‘it. One of the men, a sailor, swam
ashore for the purpose of obtaining assistance
whilethe others clung to the hon. Before as-

exhausted, fell into the water, and were drow-
ned. Thejoung man was rescued. Neither
of the bodies have been recovered.

petition was presented for a charter for a rail-
road from the \Vestern shores of Lake Supe-
rior to the Pacific. This looks as if the Eng-
lish, seeing the importance of this route, are
determined to build one in advance of the A-
mericans through their own territories.

dians, was got up at Covington, opposite Cinci-
natti. Upwards of 10,000 persons attended.‘
The matter turned out to be _a humbug. and
the crowd became greatly excited, threaten-

of which was accused of getting up the affair.
The Mayor and police opportuuely arrived, ar
rested ten of the ringleaders, and quelled the
disturbance.
