Washington Hunt was placed at tlre’head of
the ticket as the candidate. for Goveriioi'-‘—'-'-’a' well
known and well tried Whig, and who had been ,
selected for that ofiice by the unanimous voice
of the \Vhigs of the State befire the conven-
tiori assembled. The coriservatives who re-
fused to vote on the noininatious, still remained
in the convention; there was as yet no pretext
for their leaving it. It was a more riiatter of
disserrtiorr as to the time when the iioniiriations
should be tirade, wliether before or after the
cinsideration of the resolutions, and they were
bound by the decision of the irrajority thereon.
'Tlie nominations lraving thus been made, the
report: of the coirimittee on resolutions came
up for review and action. Various amended
and substitute resolutions were sribriiitted and
after a sonievvhat war-iii discussion, were all
vreferred to a new committee, consisting of the
-old one, and eight other members added to it.
This new coininittee was however unable to
agree, the nierrrbei-s‘ being equally divided.
Firrally, the first resolutions were sulistantially
voted do\vn, and others substituted in their
place, approving generally of the administra-
tion of the National and State governments,
endorsing the cturseif Senator Seward; de-
clarirrg the continual hostility of the \Vliigs of
New York to the extension of -‘Slavery; and
recommendirig the immediate extension of the
Jeffersonian ordnance over the territories of
.New Mexico and Utah, on the first iiiclicatiori
-tliat. slavery is likely to be introduced tlierein.

a vote of74 yeas to 4'2 nays, and imrncdiately

‘proceedi’rigs of the Convention; and I think
‘both you and your readers will agree with me
in saying, that there was nothing in the actiotr
of the majority, or in the principles of the
resolutions adopted by them, to justify the fac-
tions and disorganiziiig course of the niiriority.
It was a convention of '\Vliigs, nret for the
nomination of candidates for office. The nom-
inations were fairly made, and the candidates
selected, undoubted '\Vliigs. lt is not pretend
ed that there was airy irrforiri=.i|ity or urifairiress
in this part of the proceedings. After the
