Ma. Eorroa :—It is a.-positive fact that our
common schools do not receivetliat necessary
and deserving support of the public that they
once did. Schbol . proprietors seem to have
fallen into a state of false security, judging
from the great lack of interest on this subject.
The law that where there is little to pay there
is little value, seems here to be understood and
misflphlied. Beyond doubt our large fund of
public money is at present doing more injury
than good. If a man was paying a teacher
eight or ten dollars, per scholar, out of his
own pocket. he would have his eyes open to
see whether or not he was getting the worth
of his money in the education of his children.
He would visit the sch ml ofrener and would
‘give the tea :her that was doing well more cred-
it, than if paying nothing for the same labor.
In the State of New Jersey there is but a
small school fund, paying but a small propor-
tion of the teacher's wages—the balance corn-
ing from those individuals who compose his
proprictors———yet this operates favoraiily rather
than otherwise, if but an enterprising teacher
is at the helm.
By the way ofillrrstration I wish to speak of
the district school of Sommervrlle. a town in
central Jersey. 'l‘his school is taught. by Mr.
\Vm. I-1. Jellitf, formerly of VVilton. \Vhile it
is understood that the teacher has acted his
part, let it also be known that his supporters
deserve the name in points pa ramonnt to pe-
cuniary payment. I sa\v his school room lined
with complete sets of geographical.anatomical
and astronomical maps, and also saw the advan-
tages of teaching arithmetic‘ with a set of black-
boards. Twice a week a lecturer talks to his
scholars about physiology, anatomy and higene.
Last fall one hu_ndred and fifty dollars was ap-
-propriated by his district for a school celebra-
t.ion—a beautiful satin banner costing one hun-
dred dollars was presented his school—u pic
nic to “ Clrimney-rock” was proposed and
. thirty carriages was accordingly oll'ered to con-
vey the children there. By the way, at this
pic-nic there was a lawyer doctor, and cler-
gyman. lnoticed that they all conversed more
or less with their tcacher— all seemed delight-
ed with the beautiful aspect of nature as well
as with the innocent‘ sports of the juveniles.
Now this school is a fair sample of many in
New Jersey, where it is said by the people of
Connecticut that schools are in such a low con-
dition. How is it in Norwalk, which has the
name of having the best schools in the State ?
1 have been told from creditable authority that
there is in the whole town, but one good school

arran,<1ed zand tfhat the outline maps are not be
found except in but two schools. Surely, it

Friday morning, as the express tr.-Lin for New
Haven was coming up, when near‘ Mottlmveri,
it was run into by one «of the .‘l+l-a-rlem engines
from Fordham. The usual signal was given
‘for the lattcr train to break -up. in order to al-
low the New Haven train to pass, according to
the regulations of the road, but the signal was
not heeded, and hence ‘the collision. The
Harlem engine was run by a firernaa»: who evi-
dently knew but little of an engineer's duty.
A baggage «car, and one of the passenger cars
ofthe New Haven train were thrown off the
-track and considerably injured ; the Harlem
engine was also t.hrown off, and disabled. One
of the 'b:rakernen on the Express train was
slightly hurt by being thrown against a switch
———the passengers providentially escaped injury.
The firemen who had -charge of the Harlem
locomotive, we learn, has been discharged.

E2?’ A mad dog in Bridgeport. made its ap.
-pearance in one of the public schools a few
:days since. The teacher had presence of mind
enough to pour a pitcher of water upon the
animal, which threw it int.o convulsions, thus
gave time for the escape ofherselfand the chil-
dren. The dog was immediately killed by
men in the neighborhood. '

to repair it, but while they were at work the
stones began to crack, and they. abandoned the
work altogether, in fright.

ceived of the death of Mrs. Bushnell, wife of
Rev. Mr. Bushnell, missionary of the Arnr.-.ri-
can Board in \Vest Africa. She was a native
of Salem, N. Y. and first went to Africa in
1.837 as a teacher of the Methodist Episcopal
Board.
Dr. Judson, the missionary, is not likely to
live, it is said. He has left. his station for the
lsle of Bourbon, for his health. His wife,
“ Fanny-Forrester,” did rot accompany him.
