the losses by the late storm, none have excited
n more melancholy interest than that of the
ship Elizabeth, from Legliorii to New York.
This ship touched at Gibraltar, and lost her
captain by small pox. The mate took coin-
niand and set sail for New York. On reacli-
ing t.lie coast, she went ashore on the South
side of Long Island. near Fire Island, in the
latter part of Tliursday night, or soon after
daylight on Friday. Five of the passengers
and three ofthe crew were lost. The passen-
gers were Giovanni, i\1:irqnis D’Oss0li, blar-
garet Fuller D'Ossoli, wife of the Marquis,
their young child. Celcsta Pardena, of Reine,
and Horace Sumner, of Boston. Much inter-
est is felt in the fate of these persdns, and
particularly in that of the Marcliioness, who
was an American ‘lady, of rare gifts and accom-
iplisliments, best; known in the literary world
She was the
'daugliter of Hon. Timothy Fuller of Boston,
formerly a member of Congress.

nalof Commerce furnishes a comparative,
statement of_tlie receipts of lead in the princi-
pal Atlantic cities for the last five years.-
Froni May, "1846 to May 1847', the recipts
were of American 509.018, for the corres-
ponding period of 1847 8, the receipts were
623,373, American, for the next year, 481,-
800 American, and 440,000 foreign, and for
the year just closed 103,160 American and
137,000 foreign. The rcco-.-ipts now are al-
most wholly of foreign lead. '
If these statistics are correct and the figures
have been properly transcribed. it shows to
what extent the tariff of 1846 favors the inter-
ests of foreign countries at the expense of our
own. There is now lying in American soil,
lead enough to supply this country for ages.

tries, we have enough at home for every Object
of home consumption. But as long as our laws
encourage foreign manufactures and foster
foreign labor rather than our own, so long will
the lead from abroad be cheaper in our Atlan-
tic cities than ourowii, and will in a very short;

ficiently repaid to enable them to send all that:

ian government has granted to Gen. Garibaldi a
pension and ordered its Consular agent in this
country to assist the noble exile. he writes thus

June, from Gibralter;——
, “I leave to day for England, whence I
calculate to sail for New York. My Italian
friends give me a vessel, wliich they place
under my orders. I am going to America to
navigate as a merchant sea captain, so long
as shall please God. I would fair; in spite
of the risk, navigate under the auspices of
our dear colors, and I meant to do so but cer-
tain considcrations conncc:ed with business
do not admit it, and in my character of incr-
chant I obey. Ishall then, perhaps, be ena-
bled, under the powerful flag of the United
States, to revisit the cherished shores where
presides all the hopes of this poor life.”
