SHARON SPRINGS, Sept. 14, A1848.
llfcssrs. Editors :—On arriving here I found
so much of interest to me that I have concluded
to inform your readers where and ‘V1105 it is-
It may be well for any one afllicted with cuta-
hcous diseases, to lay this article aside for future
reference. You start from Albany 9“ the
western railroad and come to Platina Bridge.
you take the stage for Sharon, which is about
9 miles distant. There are two springs issuing
from the base ofa very high hill. The Wliite
Sulphur Spring, is so strongly impregnatéd
wiih sulphur that yfiii can smell it for some
rods distant. The btli'e'r Spring is mostly
magnesia—-it is said that their efiects produce
the best results in cutaneous diseasas, by bath-
ing in, and drinking the water, which is antbing
but palateable. _ V
There are four public houses liere. One,
the Mansion House, is} on a‘ high hill, and is
large enough to accommodate 229 at a time.
I have estimated the receipts of the house by
the number and price, and find they amount
to about 835,000 dollars fdr three iiiont__l_i's.—-
They have their “ Alley,” their “ Bai‘," and
their water from the “ fountain” : all for the
gi"§i‘tiiicatii:.'n of the animal, not the moral man.
\Vould that men would seek to drink of the
fountain of living is"-'atei's. which, if they drink
thereof they would never t-l'lll'St.
‘ The country around is very picturesque.
The Spring is in a deep ravine, hills rise very
high on the west, south and east. On the
”W'cst; a dense ferest; on the east large liighly
cultivated fields. The view from one of these
hills extends to the Green Mountains on the
north; the Catskill mountains on the south
east, and so far as you can see on all sides.
This will some‘ day be a gre-‘at watering place.
May none of your readers be obliged to come
here for the benefit of tlieir licalth. There
are so many mineral curiosities here that I
wonder we have nevei' heard more ofit. Pet.
rified wood and fish, and shells show, that it
113's been turned up side down.

E? Mr. Howard,‘ long a’nd favorably known
as the proprietor of I-Ioward’s Hotel, New
York, has opened a new and spléiidi'di Hotel,
called the “ Irving House.” The location‘ is
in Broadway, opposite Stewart’s marble palace.
The house contains over 250 rooms_. besides
magnificent dining and drawing‘ rooi‘n‘s. Near-
iy $500,000 has been expended on the Hotel
and fixt.ures, and $100,000 on‘ the moveable’
furniture.

York Day Book gives an e’stiin"ate of the estates
possessed by the_several candidates for Presi-
dent and Vice President. It is as follows:—
Taylor $60,000 or $80,000 ; Cass $1,000,000;
Van Buren $200,000; Fillmore $15,000;
Butler $320,000; and C. F. Adams $500,000.

 Adams inherited all or nearly all of his

property, and Mr. Cass acquired his wealth
while in the service of the government.

f? The Free Soil party of this, and the
neighboring towns, held a meeting at the Town
Hall on Monday evening last. There were about
tliirty persons present, two thirds" of whom
were \Vhigs and Locofocos, who attended from
the promptings of idle curiosity.

 \Ve learn from the Biridgeporti papers,
that Mr. John B. Gough, the celebrated Tem-
perance Lecturer, will visit that city during
the month of October and Lecture on Tem-
perance. \Vhy can’t we get him here ? \Vlio
will move in the matter?

 

x L3?‘ The next annual Fair 6f the American
Institute will open at Castle Garden, New
York, on Tuesday, the 3d df October. It
promises to surpass in magnitude and design
all former exhibitions of the kind. Articles for
exhibition wiil be received on Friday and Sat-
urday, 29th and 30th Sept.‘ The Fair will be
open two weeks. ploughiiig and spading
match willicome off on Thursday, Oct. 5th.

4'2? The Cartmeii of the city of New‘York
are making arrangements for a deinonstation of
their own in favor of Taylor and Fillmore." \Ve
learn that; among the largieinuniber who have
signed the call a co'nsider'able proportion ii1=Lvei'
yet voted any ticket not manufactured or en-
d6rsed'in"Tammany Hall.

H ii-sax CLAY.—-The Naticliez Courier of
the 8th inst. says‘: “ A letter from tl1isidistin-
guished statesman was received in town, a
few days since. In it. he stated that he should
cordially support Gen. Taylor, and expressed
surprise that any due could have thought’ for
an instant that he would take any other course.
\Ve trust that this statement will cause’ all
those of the opposition who have been pretend-
ing that Mr. Clay would not support Gen.
Taylor, to hold their tongue.‘

markable fact, that every newspaper without.
exception, which at this tin‘ié:suppoi'ts Martin
Van Buren for the Presidency, would under
his own law be arrested by the Southern "Post-

I?‘ David Hale. Esq.. of the N.Y. Journal ,
of Commerce, has so far recovered from the’
severe attack of congestion on the brain, with
which he was stricken three or four months
since, as to resume his labors.

1?? Rev. John N. Mafiit is drawing vast
audiences in Arkansas, wherever he holds
forth. Hehas been there’ for some time past,
and is attracting universfzl attention. The press
at the State warmly applaud him.

E?” A Washington coi'i'espondent of the N.
Y. Express, writing under datii of Sept. 19th.
says that Senators Mangum and Berrien, pub-
lished a Card in the National Intelligencer this
morning, contradicting the rumor of their inten-
tion to support Cass find Butler for the Presi-
dency and Vice Presidency of the United
States. They both remain strong friends of
Taylor and Fillmore.
