society is represented in almost every phase,
and every aspect, in which it can be presented
for our observation. ‘
From the niillionaire with all the luxury and
refinement that VVe.tllll can impart, attended by
a rctinue oflbose who minister to his pamper-
ed appetites, and cringe with sycophantic obsi-
saiice to receive his smile,—to the " cripple,”
the ‘‘ beggar,” and the “ Blind Boy,” who come
here, with hat. in hand, to tell their tale. of suf-
fering, and receive the pitance which genuine
charity and benevolence are ever ready to be-
ntow,—'-every intermediate link are here. Here
is the haughty bcllc, who comes to flutter her
brief season throngli these beautiful _bowers,
and feast her perverted senses on the admira-
tion that may be expressed for her person or
equipage. Here is blooming maidenhood
in all-«its loveliness and beauty, spending the
hours of its nivtiate in the most bevvitching
and bewildering excitement; entranced by a
‘thousand novel circumstances by which it finds
itself surrounded.
Here the devotees of fashion display them-
‘selves in all the trappings of a gorgeous and
wild idolatry. And run through the endless
changes of senseless ceremony, with a puiictil-
ious particularity, that enslaves all their powers.
llere timid girlhood takes its first lessons,
and precocious boyhood unfolds itself to the
teachings of _/'u.sl1.z'mzablc society.
Here, too, comes decripid age, leaning upon
its staff, or on the arm of some kind friend——oi'
sits and smokes its long pipe, like a venerable
patriarch of the olden time, surrounded by a
«living wreath of beauty and affection. And
here is the panting invalid, pale and languid,
and worn into emaciation by the irritative and
fretful action of disease._ And as the pale suf-
ferer is borne along by kind friends to the
Bethesda whose healing waters have imparted
new life to thousands of our race, you may see
the eye sparkle, and the countenance glow with
the hope of recovery. The very nostrils dilate
as they snuff the morlriing air, and God's beau-
tiful sunlight seems to fall most benignantly
upon them. O, for an angel to trouble the
waters while they drink to be healed.
XlVith the morning light: they leave their
apartments, and flock in multitude to the spring,
while the stirring notes of music from the Sara-
toga Baiid thrill the very soul,and imparts new
life and spirit to the delightful scene.
But hold on to your purse, for in that very
crowd,'is the stealthy pickpocket. Disguised
in the garb ofa gentleman. he at once disarins
suspicion, and rifles the unwary and unsuspect
ing of that, \vhich is very essential to the visitor
under such ciicumstances. and in such a place.
Saratoga is indeed, a most: charming place,
and the new comer might very easily imagine
that he had at last found a spot t'h_athad never
been blighted by the terrible curse ofsin. The
bright sun, the balmy air, the shady groves. and
the bewitching beauty, all serve to entrance
the senses and fill the mind with a conscious-
ness of voluptous enjoyment, and he wishes at
once that all his friends were here, and that
they might pass their days in just such a place
as this. _
But this is only the wild dream of the be-
Xvildered senses, which soon, very soon, passes
‘away, while stern reality stares him again full
in the face. A
I All the Hotels are rcma rkable for the air of
‘neatness and comfort which th cy impart. Seine
‘of them are spacious and magnificent in the ex-
treme. Conspicious among them, and superior
in many respects is the United States. This
immense establishment swarms with a living
multitude of human beings, ‘who look out from
its balconies—promenade its extensive piazzas,
or sport themselves over its ‘truly magnificent
'groiintls. The lady with her husband—the
belle with her mustaclied adinii'er—the maiden
with her lovei'—and the ni'1rs'e with her chil-
dren, may be seen to dot this beautiful laiid-
scape. And as the mixed throng are moving
about, you may discover in close proximity, the
Statesman, the Diplomatist, and the whiskercd
lmonkey. The venerable matron of three score
.years, and the Butterfly playcard of fashion. It
‘is indeed a mixed inultitude—a motley group-
‘:1 ii edition of humanity worth observing, al-
‘though its singular presentations may seem to
\varrant a re-issue every season.
‘But the good, the wise, and the great, are
here, and the communion of such spirits en'-
-hances the enjoyment ofu visit to Saratoga.
The amusements are as various as are the
di'lTerent tastes of the visitors to such a place.
For those who wish to “ see the Elephant” or
lthe “Rhinoceros,” or “ ground and lofty tum-i
lbling," Raymondls Menagerie and Circus is at
hand. For 'tliOSe'Wl10 seek amusement in
"‘-trippi‘n'g the light, fantastic toe,” a “ grand
lhop" will ‘come off at the United States. For
lovers of music ‘there is ‘every species of per-
formance. from the Saratoga “ Brass Band” to
the “ Etheopian Minstrels,” and from the ele-
gant piano of the ladies’ ‘drawing room, to the
Jiand organ in the street. But of all instrumen-
tal music to which I ever listened-, the mtst
exquisitely sweet, the most ravishingly delight-.
ful, is produced by the Styermarkische Band,
who are now so greatly adding to the a‘t:tractions
of this most attractive place.
But I find my sheet is almost “ used up” ‘and
I must close without beginning to do justiceto
the various subjects to whichl have alluded.
