hold his troops in readiness to move into Texas
to repel invasion either of the Mexicans or

battles of.Resac'a de la Palina, Monterey and‘
Buena Vista made Taylor the most noted man
of the war. His nomination by the \Vhig
’Couvention for the Presidency will test the stib-

THE CHOLl~‘.RA.--Tlle cholera has broken
out with unusual severity, both at Moscow and
Constantinople. The crews of the merchant
ships have sufl'ered severely. At Has-Keui
(Turkey) the mortality has been so great, that
several Jewish families of the village have left
their liabitations and encampod themselves in
the plains of liiat-Kane and Ali Ba Keui. It
appears that during the ‘last year 300,000 per-
sons had been attacked and about 100,000 had
perished in Russia. The late course of the
disease in Russia is agreed to have been in all
respects similar to the course in 1830-3]. It
was then abated bv the frost, and re-appeared
with the spring. It was hoped that it had
spent its force at the period when the frost set
in, but its revival at widely distant points, under
similar circumstances to the former, is regarded
with great interest by the medical authorities,
and give its own warning, which, it is to be

last week, a fire broke out in the woods, in
Milton Society neaq,'.tlie line between Cornwall
and Litchfield, which consumed 2 or three hun-
dred acres of forest, and several hundred cords
of wood, which had been prepared for coaling.
The wood and woodland belonged to the Corn-
wall Iron Company. The fire originated from
a coal pit. The loss is immense, though not
definitely ascertained.

‘Catholic Church, situated at: the junction of
York and Lafayette streets, New Haven, was
entirely destroyed by fire. The fire is suppos-
ed to have originated from a furnace which had
been used in the sacristry during the day. It
;was insured.
