ADVERTISERS AND TRADE.
Although the last season has been unusually
dull in the mercantile departments oftrade.none
could have failed to have noticed that those
have done the most heavy business who adver-
tise. The opinion which used to be entertain-
ed by business men, that advertising availed
nothing, has long since exploded, and business
men are awaking to their true interests on this
subject. In the large cities some of the Dry
Goods and other firms. advertise, annually to
the amount of thousands of dollars. Geo. \V.
Simons 6: Co. of Boston, advertise $2000 each
year, and ifit did not pay these sagacious mer-
chants would have stopped advertising long ago..
Some men consent to advertise out of charity
to the printer, but we ask no such sympathy-
as we venture to say no class of mechanics re-
turn so heavy a dividend as the conductors of
papers, and so well is this fact established, that!
it has been a settled fact, ifa man wants to se-
cure, or offer bargains of any sort, he must ad-
vertise.

In relation to the ability of this Gov-
ernment to unite a sufficient number of
deputies. to ratify the Treaty signed on
the 2d ult. I have my doubts; indeed it
appears impossible though it may take

gress. Since that time they have been
