says the astonished and outraged Patriot. “ ever’
having been-given to Santa Anna by Mr. Polk or
any one else I" These last four words were badly
used by the writer, they completely spoil/his equivo-
cating quibble. For though the exact copy of the
“ pass," ifany which was transiuittcd to Santa An-
na. may not have been obtained, the fact of his hav-
' ing been supplied with such a paper, of some sort,
rests upon the authority of M r. Polk hiniself—and is
therefore not to he questioned by the New Hamp-
shire man, but athis peril! Here are Mr. Polk's
own words—see his Message of 1845:

exposed ‘to danger and sudden death; not
only on the field of battle, btit by exposure
to unhealthy and deadly climases; and
that in going to the fight many of us have
our hearts depressed by the melancholy
conviction that, if we fall, our wives and
children will be helplessly thrown on the
cold charities of the world.
" We must respectfully ask our country
to give tis the assurance, if we offer up
our'lives in her service, that she will pro-
vide for our destitute widows and orphans;
and that she may do so, we hgiribly peti-
tion your honorable bodies to pass sucha
law as you in your wisdom shall deem
just-or shall give to the wives and chil-
dren of officers and soldiers dying in the

melancholy petition, is the fact that many of the
signers have in the interim fallen on the battle field.

“ Being dead." says Major Harvey Brown, they
now einpliatically speak saying :. “ VVe have offered
, up our lives to our country,and we now call upon
her to provide it decent competence for our bereav-

for the desolation in thousands of hearts, which this

ception of anti-slavery petitions, on the ground that
the right of petition is, and should be kept, inviola-
ble, a large portion ofthe Northern Locos vote to

aotted with loyalty for the slave power. That Such
men can, without it blush, claim to be Democrats,
