Rangers yesterday, who were on their re-
turn home. When they left this city,
with Gen. Patterson’s train, they were re-
marked for their robust appearance._ They

they were.. These are men, too, who have
passed a lifetime in the open fields, ifthey‘
cannot withstand disease, there is but lit.-
tle hope of our volunteers ever becoming
acclimated. '
The Mexican portion of the population
of this city are said to be in a miserable
condition-—-inany_of them without suste-
nance or the actual necessaries of life.—-
Government alleviate much suffering, ho§.v-
cver—mcny of them are fed from the com-
missariat.
fl .N'atz'onal Debt.-——Shall this country
be ‘burdened any further with a national
debt, or shall our expenses be met as they
arise’! With the experience of Europe
before us it would seemthat there could
be but one answer. The expenses of the
war have been enormous——-the President
has declare a determination concerning
the terms of peace, which, if adhered to
by our government, must protract the war
in spite of every thing—an increase of
the army will be inevitable, and of course
it greatly increased expenditure. No man
of sense can believe that the present debt,
$45,000,000, represents. the whole indebt-
edness of the country. That sum would
soon be doubled if the war were to end
to-morrow, on the presentation of claims
and the ascertainment of the pensions
justly due to the disabled and ‘bereaved.
Much more, it‘ the war is to continue, have
we reason to apprehend a mammoth debt,
unless means are employed to increase
the revenue. With the present prospect
nouloan could be taken by the government
on such terms as the last,—more probably
the treasury would be compelled to sub-
