form the duties of the high office of Presi-

If Gen. Taylor shall in good faith submit his
claims to a \Vbig National Convention and re-
ccive its nomination for President‘, we shall feel
bouhd to support hitn— not as the man we would
prefer, but as the best we can elect; but here
he plainly repudiates the arbitramont of any Na-
tional Convention or other tribunal, and avows
his ‘determination to run at all events and all
hazards. How this comports with his express-
ed opinion that Mr. Clay and other Statesmen
are better titted for President than himself, let
his admirers say. How does he know that one
of these confessedly more capable men may not
be more popular also ?— Trio.

On Tuesday, as the freight train on the
’ Housatonic road, was going north below
Canaan, it ran over a negro and cut his
head off. The negro being under the in-
fluence of liquor crawled into one of the
“cattle guards,” placed himself directly
under the track. When rising up to peep
out the “ cow-catcher” on the engine,
caught him directly in the neck and sever-
ed his head from his body.
