Chalmers comes to us quite unexpected. I-Iel
was, unquestionably, the most able and success-
ful pulpit orator in Great Britain. D Chal-
mers died at Glasgow. The Europezlhmes
in announcing his death, says:
“He expired as calmly, in Scotland, the‘
other day, as the babe at its mother’s'
lbreast- as placid, resigned, contentedly.
No previous intimation showed that he
was heir to nature’s infirmity ;, the hand
of disease was not upon him. The brill-
iant intellect was to have shed its light
next day on the General Assembly. He
was a great man—great in his power, in
his mental supremacy, in his moral gran-
deur. Foremost amongst one of the most
oenlightened and best educated nations in
the world, Dr. Chalmers was his country’s
idol—— her favorite son. Peace to his
memory! .He broke through the fetters
of self interest in establishing the Free
Cluirch, and preferred theidictates of con-
sciencc, the sense of manly independence,

ments of a throne. In his life he was re-

Curious Dz'sc0ve7'_i/.—In digging among
the foundations of Grace church, at the
corner of Broadway and Rector st. which
has recently been pulled down, a coffin,
apparently of silver, was discovered, about
two feet and a half in length, containing
the body fa female child, with an in-
scription eating date 1767. The coffin
had a glass over the face, and a little far-
ther down on the coffin a looking glass set
in the metal. Near the foot of _the coffin
was an aperture closed by a glass stopper,
which being opened it appeared that the
coffin was filled with spirits of turpentine,
in which the body was preserved, so that
the features, though somewhat collapsed,
were seen through the glass. The whole
was enclosed in a strong deal outer coffin.

shall, was struck by lightning on the 14th
offCape Henry, and sank. Four of the
