most of the details of wlnicli were derived

est, which we do not remember to have
been chronicled, are annexed:

false move might have proved fatal to the

gallant Bragg as promptly as it was given,
and his battery instantly vomited forth

charged with musket balls and every spe-
cies of (lt'.lll’l dealing missiles.

We should have statcd that Gen. Vi-'ool
had been maneuvering to draw the Mexi-
cans within reach of our artillery. He
made a feint of attacking tliein in force,
and suddenly retreatiiitz, decayed them
within range of ourligbt batteries. His
force opened to the right and left, and the
ibavoc was tremendous. Six thousand
cavalry charged B‘ragg’s battery; when
wiihin two hundred yards, every gun open-
ed upon them, cutting it lane ilireiigb their
entire column thirty feet broad. A second
round lialzeil them for a moment, but the
third proved so destructive that they fled
in the greatest confusion.

The fighting continued for some time
after this, but the repulse of this charge
upon the battery, contributed more than
anything else, to the victory. 'l he battle

THE NEXT CONGRESS.

The Charter election takes place in this city
on Tuesday next. The wings have nominated
Alderman Bi'ady'as their candidate for Mayor
——.1 worthy citizen and respectable man. His
respectability and fitness for the place, howev-
er, will in all pi'obabilit.y ensure his defeat.
The locofocos must; liavo taken this view of the
matter when they nominated J. Sherman Brow-
nell as their candidate. This man was for ma-
ny years a keeper of a low groggery, but has
latterly given up that business and embarked
in the trade of politics. He belongs to that
class of loafers iii the city knownas “ the b’hoys,”
dc from them he will receive a vvarm support,
VVell, it is consoling to know that locofocoism
cannot run much lower in the selection of candi-
dates. The next step downward will land it in
the gutter. It remains to be seen whether the
respectable portion of the Democracy will give
