as has been that of Judge Bissell, they cannot‘
find something substantial against liim"to fright;-I
en oil‘ a few votes. So vage, remote, and unsup-i
ported is everything alleged against him, that it
mightlie as well at the door of any man in the
State, even the whitliugs in whose lil'tilt'lS they?
were concocted. They have no reference toi
questions of State or national policy which now,
_ agitate the country. Such issues appear to be‘
avoided as too well understood, and upon which
the freeinen of the State are too well qualified v
to form intelligent. and independent opinions.——
The burden ofthe song is Fc(Zerali'.sm., Fecle-ral-
ism. \Vell, what if it were established, as in
Mr. \Vhittlesey’s case, what does it amount. to ?
A'bugbear of the most flmsey nature. Judge
Bissell volunteered to defend his country in the
time of her trial. Our noisy locofoco patriots
are careful that their patriotism shall not show
itselfbeyond their columns, notwithstanding the
war in which the country is now engaged, is the
legitimate offspring of locofocoism.
But to help along the Farmer in it.s onslaught
and at the same time to show how hard up the‘
Judge's opponents are for clectioneering mate-
rial, we copy the material part of its last
week’s leader, for wich we suppose it will be
duly grateful :
“Born and educated a federalist of the old
school, a “representative of the Trunibulls,” “as
square as a brick,” he has alv.-'a_vs iipposod the
extension of“equal rights and privili-.r1es” to the
people. He opposed the adoption ofoiii-.i-cpnb-
lican Co:ist.itution, which says no oxcliisive
privileges shall be grantci.l to any mm or set of
men. He opposed the extension of the right. of
voting to men who performed military duty" ,
He opposed the reduction of the poll tax,whicl1
was imposed on apprentices eighteen years of

and mechanics. He opposed the abolition of the
. old Church and State tax, which was imposed on
those who neither believed the creed nor atten-

repeal of the British Common Law, “The

signed to suppress the liberty of speech and the
freedom ofthe press.”

is formidable, but yet incomplete. It should bel
known that our candidate is opposed (the Regis-

which have long since exploded from their own
impracticability; and that he is utterly opposed
to bullying and robbing a weak neighbor, and?
like a spiritless craven surrendering “clear and:

To all this is Judge Bissell opposed, we pro-
