Almost every man in it is anxious to serve his
country. Offices of einoluincnt are of course
most sought after, yet so deep rooted is the love:
of place that men struggle hard for the ltonor of
holdingseats in u nominating convention. \Vhy,
I well remember the tiinc—it was years ago
when I was a boy and lived in Comiccticut. and
perhaps the times have changed there somewhat
'-—but I remember the time when many towns
in your good old state were utirc-.presented in
conventions because no one was willing to bear
the expense of attending them. But in this
state, and more especially in this city, there are
so many applicants for the privilege of holding
seats in conventions, that it is-difficult to make a
selection. Only eleven of the sixteen delegates
totho State convention were chosen in this citv
on Thursday evening last. The remaining 011;.
ers will be selected next week. As I l'Cll12ll'l;.

ernor, will be either Mr. Fillmore or Mr.
Young, and ofcourse the friends of each of these
catididiites were anxious to secure a \favorable
delegation from this city. This in part explains
the difficulty in the election of delegates.
I am strongly oftlie opinion that Mi‘. Young
will be the successful candidate before the con-
vention. And I am quite as confident, that if
nominated, he will be elected. He has great.
popularity in the \Vcs.torn part ofthc state and
is an especial favorite with the young \Vliigs.-—
His course on the Anti-rent question at the last
Session ofthe Legislature will secure for him a
jiowerful support in the the Thzrd St-.;mto,-3,11
District.
. Mr. Fillmore is a man of greater ability and
ngher reputation than Mr. Young, but it is
thought by many that he is too conservative in
hispriiiciplcs, and has not sufficient sympatliv

fact cannot be disguised that a strong party is
now springing up in the ranks of the \Vliig.s

that it means anti-slavery, anti-rent, anti-intol-
eratice, anti-linnging, anti-Native Anierican and
unti-present-organization-of-society. This pa 1'-
ty, however, is powerful in numbers and still
more powerful from its sympathy with the la-
boringinen of the country, and its hatred of op-
prcssion and tyranny in all their forms, Gov.
Steward perhaps stands at its head, and has ablc
co-laborers in Greely, \Vee_d and Dawson.-
\Vliat its future success will be, it is iinpossiblo
even to make it decent guess. All the signs of
the times point to a coming change in the pres-
ent organization of parties. Perhaps this party
may form the nucleus of a great Northern party
composed of all who are desirous of tlirowing off
the yoke of Southern slave holders, so longsub-
uiissivoly borne, and oflegisluting for the ii.t'.er-
ests of free labor rather than squandering mou-
ey in carrying on an unholy war for the exten-
sion of slave tcrritory. lfsuch shall p.rove to be
the rcsnlt——if Northern men assert. their rightx
to be heard in the councils of the nation and no!
longer suffer themselves to be the servile instru-
ments of the slave.o_cracy—if their efforts are
devoted to elevating and exalting the laborer
rather than riveting the chains of slaveiy upon
their fellow beings——ifa party is formed for this
purpose and object. then it w.ll deserve the cor-
dial support ofthe entire North. And such at
party will receive that support. Look at New
Hampshire. Look at the vote of the House of
Representatives declaring that no territory-~
liereafter acquired shall be polluted with slave-
ry. The signs of the times are cheering.
But this has little to do with the nomination of
Governor. And perhaps it is about as visionary
as Greely’s t.hcory respecting the happy state of
society which will soon exist.
