stantial nnd durable manner—-it,s sides coit-
eist of 1 1-2 incli plank, and its roof of
large and thick Cypress shingles. The
posts are ‘Ill feet, the roof 28 feet, making
the latter several feet longer than the sides,
very sharp, allowing the rain to pass off
very readily, and therefore both tight and
durable.
lts beautifully proportioned steeple, be-
ing at one corner ofthe building, gives its
front view a unique and singular appear-
ance. 'l he exterior of the building has
something about itfittcd to strike the eye,
it loo‘ 3 solid, &. venerable, as a building
suited to the object of worship. The inte-
rior corresponds with its exterior. The
roofis supported by several large massive
arches, which appear _in the building and
strike the eye upon entering‘ it The walls
roof, so as to imitate oak panncl. As you
stand on the floor, looking up among its
arches, t.lie roof seems to be of very great
height, its apex being :30 feet from the
floor. The building is lighted by stained
glass windows. The light is rich, mellow
anal pleasing to the eye. The unpleasant
glare of sunlight is excluded. It has 96
slips on the floor, besides an end gallery
for the choir.
The whole cost of the building, inclu-
ding furniture, is about $6000.
The work, the joinery, masonry and
painting have been well done. Mr. Upjoln
of N. Y. is the architect, Jonathan Beers
of Bridgeport, the builder, and Mr. Trubee
ofFairfield, the mason.
A regular but-endcr of a cucumber was
raised the present. season by Benedict Arnold
Stevens of New Canaan, which measured
fourteen inches in length, and thirteen in circum-
frence.
