NE of the most interesting facts accorded
in the Bibie, is that which relates to the
treatment of the sick and the ‘cure of diseases.
Nlost persons perliaps, may uot be aware that
the Bible from beginning to end, inakes mention
of but one method of healing the sick, and that
is by EXTE -‘(HAL A. l_’PL1CATl.Ot\". It
may at grstappenr strange that a work so coiii-
prehensive, taking its date from the foundation
of the world, embodying such an amount. of use-
ful and practical iufoi'niat.ioii, aiincxtcndiiig over
the history, experience and in.\ent.ion ofso many
generations ofmen, as the Bible, should teach
but ONE mode, and never hint at. any other, of
healing the maladies of men in all the passing
ages of the world, Is iinot. tlierefore a littls
curious to compare the simple but effectual
method of curing the cick as recorded in the
scriptures, and the cnmplii'ated, uiiccrtain and
often dangerous practice of the present day 7

creation, the same, identical, simple but \VISF.
practice ever prevailed, and was adopted by each
in tyeir inrn. This rule was laid down by the
Governor of the Universe in the jurisprudence
of Israel; it was practised in their nation with-
out chauge till the coming of Christ, by whom
and the church, it was resanction and stamped
with all the favor which t.iutli, reason, o.\'peri-»
ence and high autl'iorit'y could give it. Exterii;

Particular iiistructions and great stress were
laid upon the purification of the boily——to wash
the surface, ai1d- then to make application of oint-
ment, which was the only and direct means of
restoring the skin to its natural and healthy ac-
tion, and thus bring back the full and free dis-
charges oflnsensiblc Perspimtioii. It is worthy
of notice, that while this method of curing diseas-
es" pr‘eva:ilied among the people of God it having
been taught. them by direct revelation from on
high; the heathen, the Greeks and Romans, held
to, and practiced in the manner of the present
day, viz. by giving internal remedies. \Vhile
the mode of external application came from
Ileavcn, that of iuteriial application was the off-
spring of lieatlien ignorance, inexperience and

The first case on record is that on the Lcper,
i‘~ii Lev. xiii. 2, ‘\Vlicn a man ahall have in the
skin of his flesh a rising, a scab, or a bright. spot,’
6450., ’he shall be brought to Aaron the priest,
and he shall pronounce him unclean.’ Then
follows the cure in the next chapter, 7th verso,
‘He shall sprinkle upon him, that is to be cleans-
ed, seven times,’ an_r.l in verse 1:3, ‘and the priest
shall take seine of the log ofoil, and pour it into
the palm of. his own left hand,’ and verse 18,
‘and the remnant of the oil that. is in the priest’s

li0l)e"ClP.fl1]Se.’i.’ It is evident enough that the
purification of the surface, the restoration of the
functions of the skin, were to be the first steps
to the removal of the disease. Although the
iiifactioii lay in the blood and showed itself in the
eruptions of the skin, yet no internal remedy is
mentioned. But should a leper appear now,
what do you think, reader, would be the pre-
scription ? Instead of re:-'toring the skin, by
opening the discliargo of the waste and poison-
ous liumors of the body and the impurities of
the blood, the patient. would be required to go
through a long course of inward medicines, most
generally, physic,—pills of corrosive power, 1.‘),
20 or 30 on going to licd, and this to be repeated
ad iufinituni. The absurdity of this practice is
p‘;o flagrant to be tolerated by an enlightened
oeoplc. The next case of leprosy was that of
Naaman, the Assyrian, a lieathcrn, who v" s
required to Wash in Jo:-ilaii Seven times.
he, as many do now, looked for some ‘great
thing,’ and when he was i'c'piii'c<l to purify the
surface, by wasliing, the man was confouiided.
It was so different. from the practice of the As-
syrians, who relied wholly upon internal rome-
dios, that he became eiii'zigcr.l—-‘A.i'e not,’ said
he, ‘Abaiia and Pliarpar, rivers of Damascus,
better than all the waters of Israel?’ But he
found that the principle of curing tliseases among
the people of God, was by acting on the skin,
by cleansing and i-olzixiiig it, so that it would
eliminate the worn out and impure particles of
the blood and general juices of the body. He

another instance, in the corroboratioii of the
principle of external application. He was sick,
nigh unto death, and when he prayed for his
life, the Lord directed tlial: a preparation should
be made (not poured into his stoinacli) and ap-
plied externally. How singular the fact, that
when any insttructions were given tlircrlly from
the- Lord, they were all confined to one mode,
viz.: the restoration ofthe In.sci2s7'blc I’rcs12z'r4L-
(ion by proper applications upon the skin.
But lost any one should think these cases
more more or less connected with miraculous
power, we will refei' them to those that are not.
In James v. 14, is this remarkable ;_md emphatic
language: ‘Is any sick among you? let him call
for the elders of the church, and let them pray
over him _An.2zr1z'n.l7'n;_r him in the name of the
Lord,’ This language is broad a.iid comprclien-
sive. It includes all who may be sick, no mat-
ter what the complaint. To cure the sick there.-
fore, let him be annointcd. No\v I care not.
what are the theories or teachings of the schools
much less the wild vagaries ()f_t.l1e quaicks, but
I contend that the practice as here laid down in
the New Testament is one and idciiticiil with

I contend for the healthy state of the skin, the
natural and vigorous use of its functions, the full
and free cvacaution through its pores of the In-
eensible Perspiration ; and this seems to me, is
the principle inculcated in the Bible.
No other method is pointed out, and no other
practiced'in the whole history of the Bible. lf
We-couldfind any one instance-when. physic or
