NE of the most. ibtorosting facts "accorded
in the Bibie, is that which relates to the
treatment of the sic-.k "find the cu so of diseases.
Most. persons perhaps, may uot be aware that
the Bible from beginning to end, ma.l:es1ncnti_on
of but one method of healing the sick, and that
is by EXTERNAL APPLICATION. It
may at grstappenr strange that a work so com-
prehensive, taking its date from the foundation
of the world, embodying such an amountof use-
ful and practical information, ann extending over
the history, experience and imcntion ofso many
generations ofmcn, as the Bible, should teach
but ONE mode, and never hint at any other, of
healing the maladies of men in all the passing
ages of the world. Is it not tlierefore a littls
curious to compare the simple but effectual
method of curing the cick as recorded in‘ the
scriptures, and the cmnplirafcd, uncertain and
often dangerous practice of the present day .7
\Vhen Moses was law giver in Israel, when
Hezekiah swayed his mild sccptrc over Juduu,
and when tha Lord appeared for the redemp-
tion of the world, four thousand years from the
creation, the same, identical, simple but \VISl£
practice ever prevailed, and was adopted by each
in tyeir inrn. This rule was laid down by the
Governor of the Universe in the jurisprudence
of Israel; it was practised in their nation with-
out chaugc till the coming of Christ, by whom
and the church, it. was resanction and stamped
with all the {liver which t.u.1‘rh, reason, experi-
onc‘e and high autho_rity could give it. External
application was the Sulo, Oil or (,7) INT;\IEN'.l‘,
the means or semedy.
Particular instructions and great. stress were
laid upon the purification of the body to wa.=.h
the surfaco, and then to make application of oint-
ment, which was the only and direct: means of
restoring the skin to its natural and healthy ac-
tion, and thus bring back tl1o full and free dis-
charges oflnsensiblc P erspiration. It is worthy
of notice, that while this method of curing diseas-
es prevailed among the people of God it having
been taught them by direct revelation from on
high ; the heathen, the Greeks and Romans, held
to, and practiced in the manner of the present
day, viz. by giving internal remedies. \Vl1ilc
the mode of external application came from
Heaven, that of internal application was the off-
spring of heathen ignorance, inexperience and
mythology. The emiuatcd from that Divine
Mind, by whose word man became a livingsoul:
the other the frhits of cruc.l experiment, unnat-
dcvice, and ungodly superstition.
The first case on record is that on the Lcper,
in Lev. xiii. 2, ‘\-Vhr-.n a man ahall have in the
skin of his flesh a. rising, a scab, or a. bright spot,’
&c., ‘he shall be brought to Aaron the priest,
and he shall pronounce him unclean.’ Thcn
follows the cure in the next chapter, 7th verso,
‘He shall sprinkle upon him, that is to be cleans-
ed, Seven times,’ and in verse 15, ‘and _ll1o priest
shall take some of the log of oil, and pour it into
the palm of his own left hand,’ and verse 18,
‘and the remnant of the oil that is in the priest,’s
hand he shall pour upon the head of him thatis
to be cleansed.’ It is evident enough that the
purification of the Sl1l'fllCC, the restoration oflhc
functions of the skin, were to be the first steps
to the removal of the disease. Although the
infection lay in the blood and showed itself in the
eruptions of the skin, yet. no internal remedy is
mentioned. But should a leper appear now,
what do you think, 1's-m.lm', would be the pro-
scription ’? Instead of restoring the skin, by
opening the discharge of the waste and poison-
ous humors of the body and the impurities of
the blood, the patient would be required to go
through a long course of inward medicines, most
generally, physic,—pills of corrosive power, 19, l
20 or 30 on going to bed, and this to be repeated '
ad infinitum. The absurdity of this practice
pto flagrant to be tolerated by an enlightened
ocople. The next case of leprosy was that of
Naaman, the Assyrian, a. heafhern, who was
required to wash in Jordan seven times. But
he, as many do now, looked for some ‘great
thing,’ and when he was required to purify the
surface, by washing, the man was confounded.
It was so different from the practice of the As-
syrians, who relied wholly upon internal reinc-
dies, that he became enraged-—‘Arc not,’ said
he, ‘Ab-ana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus,
better than all the waters of Israel?’
