whithering sarcasm and the fierce invectives of
Mr. \Vebster. It was a terrible buta just pun-
ishment, I think that the pcttifoger, Dickinson,
and that libeller of Revolutionary patriots, C. J .
Ingersoll, will not be in haste again to provoke
the wrath of Daniel VVebster. They can
feilcitate 'themselves .on having gained iin1noi'tal-
ity——an immortality of infamy.
The result of your election has been receiv-
ed with sorrow by the VVhigs here. They
could not believe that Connecticut would waver
or falter in such a crisis. Hopes are still on-
tertained that you may secure the Legislature.
It is said with truth here, that if the intelligent
and honest freeman of Connecticut do not re-
main firm and true to VVhig principles, it is use-
less longer to strive against Locofoco corruption
and mis-rule.
The sub-treasury seems to be a hard pill
even for Locofocos. It sticks in their throats,
but the News and Post are determined to make
it go down, and they will succeed. It is a gil-
ded pill, and of course the ilearpcople will swal-
low it. Hurrah, for a specie currency and low
variety of new Jewelry, this day opened at
