6 NE of the most interesting facts accorded ,
in the Bibie, is that which relates to the
treatment of the sick and the cure of diseases.
Most persons perhaps, may uot be aware that
the Bible from beginning to end, makes mention
of but one method of liealing the sick, and that
is by EXTERNAL APPLICATION. It
may at grst appenr strange that a work so com-
prehensive, taking its date from the foundation
of the world, embodying such an amount of use-
ful and practical iuformation, aim extending over
the history, experience and iniciition ofso many
generations ofnien, as the Bible, should teach
but ONE mode, and never hint. at any other, of
healing the maladies of men in all the passing
ages of the world. Is ii not therefore a littls
cu.iious to compare the simple but effectual
method of curing the cick as recorded in the
scriptures, and the cnmplirated, uncertain and
often dangerous practice of the present day ?
\Vhen Moses was law giver in Israel, when
Hezekiah swayed his mild sccptre over J udnu,
and when tha Lord appeared for the redemp-
tion of the world, four thousand years from the
creation,‘ the same, identical, simple but \VISE
practice ever pre'.=ailed, and was adopted by each
in tyeir inrn. This rule was laid down by the
Governor ofthe Universe in the jurisprudence
oflsrac-.1; it was practised in their nation wi:li-
out change till the coming of Christ, by whom
and the church, it was resanction and stanipod
with all the favor which t.iu1.h, reason, experi-
ence and high autlioril'y could give it. External
application was the Sole, Oil or OINTMEUT,
the means or semedy.
Particular inst'i'nctions and great stress were
laid upon the puinication of the body——to wash
the surface, and tlien to make application of oint-
ment, which was the only and direct means of
restoring the skin to its natural and healtl.-y ac-
tion, and thus bring back the full and free dis-
eharges of Iiissoiisible P erspiration. It is worthy
of notice; that while tlll.‘.11}1Cl.l1O(l£)f{:u1'lllg»(llSG21S-
cs prevailed among the people of God it having
been taught them by direct. 1'evclatioii from on
high ; the he=.ithcn,1ho Greeks and Romans, held
to, and practiced in the manner of the present
day, viz. by giving internal remedies. \Vl1ile
Elie mode of external application came from
Heaven, that of internal application was the off-
spring of heathen ignorance, inexperience and
mytliology. The cminated from that Divine
Mind, by whose word man became a livingsoul;
the other the fruits of cruel experiment, unnat-
device, and ungodly superstition.
The first case on record that on the Lepcr.
in Lev. xiii. 2, ‘\Yl1{‘,ll a man ahall have in the
skin of his flesh arising, a seal), or a bright spot,’
650., ’he shall be brought to Aaron the priest,
and he shall pronounce him unclean.’ Then
follows the cure in the next chapter, '7't.h verse,
‘He shall sprinkle upon him, that is to be cleans-
ed, seven times,’ and in verse 15, ‘and the priest
shall take seine of the log of oil, and pour it into
the‘ palm of his own left hand,’ and verse 18,
‘and the renin-ant of the oil that is in the priest’s
hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is
to be cleansed.’ It is evi<.lent' enougli tliat the
purification of the surfiice, the }’C'1-’3l.'0‘.‘2lfi0i'l of the
functions of the sliin, were to be the first steps
to the 1'en_1oval of the cliscasc. Although the
infection lay in the blood and showed itselfin the
eruptions of the skin, yet no lI'll2‘3l’li'Z2l remedy is
rnentioned. But should a leper appear now,
what do you think, reader, would be the pre-
script-Eon ? Instead of restoring the skin, by
opening the discliarge of the waste and poison-
ous huniors of the liody and the impurities of
the blood, the patient would be required to go
through a long course of inward medicines, most
generally, physic,——pills of corrosive power, 19,
20 or 30 on going to bed, and this to be repeated
ad infinitiun. The absurdity of this practice is
too flagrant to be tolerated by an enlighteiied
people. The next case of leprosy was that of
N aziman, the Assyrian, ii hcathern, who was
required to wash in Jordan seven times. But
he, as inany do now, looked for seine ‘gre:=.t.
thing,’ and when he was 1'equi1‘c-Cl to purify the
surface, by washing, the man was coiifonnded.
It was so d°.f1'erent. from the practice of the As-'
syrians, who relied wholly upon internal reme-
dies, that he became cm'agcd——‘Are not,’ said
he, ‘Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus,
better than all the waters of Israel?’ But he
found that the principle of curing diseases among
the people of God, was by acting on the skin,
by cleansing and relaxing‘ it, so that it would
eliminate the worn out and impure particles of
the blood and general juices of the body. A He
therefore, was compelled to adopt this course,
on doing which, he immediately recovered.
The sickness and recovery of I'IeZel(lal1, is
another instance, in the corroboration of thg 1

life, the Lord directed that a preparation should
be made (not poured into his stomach) and ap-
plied externzally. How singular the fact, that
when any in.<;u'uctioiis were given directly from
the Lord, they were all confined to one mode,
viz : the restoration of the Inscnsible P’rcspz'm-
tion by proper applications upon the skin.
But lost any one should think these cases
more more or less connected with miracul'or.s
power, we will refer them to those that; are not.
In James v. 14, is this 1'ema1'l-:al)1e and emphatic
language: ‘Is any sick among you? let him call
for the elders of the church, and let them pray
over him Jl7t7l0'lIll'lIzg him in the name of the
Lord,’ This language is broad and comprehen-
sive. It includes all who may be sick, no inat-
ter what the complaint. To cure the sick there-
fore, let him be annointed. Now I care not
wlmt are the theories or teachings of the schools
much less the wild vagaries of the quaclis, but
I contend that the practice as here laid down in
the New Testament is one and identical with
that in the use of my All—-I-Ica.l'£.n.,r,r Ointment.
I contend for the healthy state of the skin, the
natural and vigorous use of its functions, the full
and free evncaution through its pores of the In-
sensible Perspiration ; and this seems to me, is
the principle inciilcatcd in the Bible.
No other method is pointed out, and’. noother
practiced in the whole history of the Bible. If

from 9 o’clock forenoou, to 5 o‘clock afternoon,

day of April, 1846, from 10 o’clock forenoon, to
2 o’clock afternoon, to perfect the List of Elec-
tors, and to examine and decide upon all appli-
cations to be admitted to the privilege of an
Electors, and to administer the oath to those so
found to be ruulified. .

plicants only, legally qualified to be so admitted,

shall have become qualified by virtue of a resi-
