The Eureka having arrived off our harbor was
unable to proceed on her route to Bridgeport, so

sail standing, while their ltulls were buried be-
neath the snow white foam that C0V€rEtl the
surface of the water. So violent was the wiitd
that it would take up the water and carry it like
a snow drift, for hundred of yards an whirl it
into the air till it was lost in the distance. The
wind was from the north—blowing off
shore, which of course did ttot produce the
commotion it would have done bad it came
more from the eastward We have heard of
very little damags done, owing probably, to the
fact, that though violc-nt,the blow was steady
ings, distrowed by the late firein that place was
forty seven.
The losses by insurance companies are distrib-
uted sotnewhat different from our statement of
last week. Protection, twelve thousand; Etna,
Hartford, fifteen thousand ; Contributionsltip,
eight thousand ; Howard, fifteen thousand ;
New Haven Mutual, ten thousand; Hartford,
two thousand; Jefferson four thousand s7x hun-
dred.
The New Haven mutual, had as stated by the
last Standard, paid several ofits losses.
