Whig State Convention.

. A Convention ofthe Whig Electors ofConnecti-
cut will be held at the 'l‘t-zuruz, in the city of New

The Committee rely with confidence for a full
and patriotic Convention upon the generous VVhig
spirit which has rarely been appealed tit in vain, in
Coitnectlciit—and which it is believed will keep the
\Vhig standard floating in trittinpli at the close ofthe
coming contest. The County and Town Comit-
tees are requested to commence immediately the
duties devolving upon them in reference to the

Convention.

The number ofbuilding disiroyed is 70. The
brig Joseph Gotham, lying at the wharf, was in
great danger, and would ltave been distruyed
with much of her cargo, had not her officers
and crew succeeded, by dint of perseverance in
spite ofthe low state ofthe tide, in getting her
from her position.

THE Titiitrr.—So mucii of the President’s
Message as relates to the Tariff has been refer-
red to the Committee of Ways attd Means in
the House, whereof Gen. M’ Kay, of N. C. is
Chairman, who reported the bill ofiast session
for the reduction ofthe 'l arilf.‘ The other mem-
bers of the Committee, are Messrs. l)rom-
goole of Va. J. R. Ingersoii of _Pa. Hungerford
of N. Y. Houston of Ala. Winthrop and Vinton
‘are Wliigs,--tlte other Locos, and most ofthem
Free Trade men.

 

The Senate Committee on FOREIGN REI.A-
‘trons, consists of Mr. Allen of Ohio-—a wool-
dyed loco, and a blusterlng demagogue, as noi-
sy and violent as the most preciousof his school.
Of course he is for all of Oregon below the par-
ellel of Simms' hole ; Messrs. Cass of Michigan

Atherton of N-. H., Archer of Va. and Sevier of

Ark.

committee of foreign relations in the Senate of

Governor oflndiana, was on the Gilt inst. elec-
ted U. Senator for six years from the 4th of
March next. This is the same gentleman whose
casting vote, when President ofthe State Senate.

rial election. T his is, we suppose,‘ his reward
iforthat violation ofiaw, and his oath to support
it. Democracy all over.

Vlfiliiam Smith, Esq. ex-Member of Congress,
,was elected Governor ofthe state of Virginia by
ithc Legislature ofthat state on the 10th inst.

The Richmond Whig says, this is the gentle-
.man, heretofore known as “Extra Billy,” or
;“Surplus VViiliam,” terms growing out of cer-
