Col. Singleton of South Carolina, had in-
vited Mr. Andrew Stevenson,_Judge Peter
V. Daniel, and John Tyler to take tea in
his cabin. Mr. Clay being unaware of the
fact, determined, about twilight, to visit
the Colonel. The three worthies above
mentioned had already arrived, before the
candles were lighted. Col. S., was stand-
ing in the door, as Mr. Llny approached.
“How do you do, Mr, Clay 'l” said the Col-
onel, in a loud voice. Tyler sprang out of
the window, ditto Peter V. Daniel, and Ste-

The earthquake of Sunday evening the 26th-'_
seems not to have been observed in New Haven,
although very generally throughout F airfield
county, as well as on Long Island, etc. The‘
New York Post states that a clergyman in Him-
tington was reading at the desk .when his book
was thrown off on the floor. '
At Greenfieldl-Iill, milk pans were thrown-.
down, and considerable consternation was pro-
duced among the people. A geiicleman residing
there mentions it as a fact, perhaps connected
with this phenomenon, that on Thursday even-

THE MORMONS.
A circular addressed “to the whole
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints,” inform us, that on Sunday, the 5th
of October, “about 5000 Saints had the in-
expressible joy and great satisfastioii to
meet, for the first time in the house ofthe
Lord in the city of Joseph.” The temple
was commenced on the 6th of April 18-11,
and on this occasion, it was entirely eti-
closed, windows in, with temporary floors,
pulpits, and seats to accommodate so ina-
riy persons preparatory to a general coii-
ference.
On the 6th, 7th, and 8th, meetings ofthe
General Conference were held ; at which
finally, it was resolved unanimously, “that

Tito remarks which we I1-awn unacle-'On one
or two occasions recently, still apply to
the Corn Market. The present harvest
crops in England are still in a very de-
pressed state. The l_iarvest has been con-
siderably retarded, owing to the unsettled
condition of the weather. Late rains
have aided in spreading the Potatoe dis-
case, which defies all attempts at eradica-
tlou. Great damage has also accrued to
the Corn crops all over the country——and
it is feared that much of it will not be in
readiness for gathering in before the ad-
vent of cold weather. A steady rise in
the value of bread-stuffs will be the con-
sequence.

an early hour last Monday morning,
a Miss Bickford, a woman of b:id-clia-r--
actor, was murdered in the house of Mr.
Lawrence in Cedar Lane, near Cambridge
Bridge, Boston. The Traveller of last
evening says——appearances indicate that
the murderer cut the woman’s throat, and
then threw the body into the fire, set fire
to her clothes, the bed and other articles
of furniture in the room, and made his es-
cape. The smolze caused by the fire in
the room occasioned the speedy discovery
ofthe deed. A notorious character, well
ced considcrably—riearly ‘ls per quarter-.,
I known, to our police, named Albert J. Tir-
rell, belonging to‘ Weymouth, is suspec-
ted of having committed the crime, sev-
eral articles of his apparel being found in
her room this morning.

It seems that lock of hair so choicely de-
posited in an oak tree, mentioned in the
American a few weeks since, was any-
thing but a-love affair. The following re-
marks .by a correspondent, solveth the
mystery.—“Tlicre was years ago, and I-
presumeis yet to some extent, a super-
stition among some people, that if you cut
offa lock ofhair from the-head,.bore aholc
in a tree, put in the hair and plug the hole
up tight——it will cure the headache or car-
aclie, I forget which. Finger nails served
in the same way relieve the tooth ache,
and so on I suppose with all other com-
plaiats—which was certainly cheaper and
perhaps as efficacious as more modern
liumbugs for relieving aches and’ pains.”

It is nowevident that the Canal tolls for
the present year will far exceed the iriost
sanguine expectations. The receipts for
the week ending the 22d inst., will’ show
an excess of $35,000 over the correspon-
ding week last last year. The aggre-
gate for the season to the 22d inst.,
over a correspoiiding period last year, will
be about $49,000.. This, supposing the
tolls for the remainder of t-he season to be
no more than they were last‘ year, will
show a total for the year 18-1-5-of ‘ $2,485,
374;. The immense receipts of produce at
tide water for the third Canal week of the
present month, and the large amount of.
merchandise passing west, so far exceed‘-
ing those of any week of any previous sea-
son, all calculation as to further. receipts
is set at defiance.
TEXAS.
The election took place in Texas on
Monday, the 13th ult. So strong was the
conviction that opposition to annexation
would be fi'tiitless, that there was not a
heavy vote polled. The vote was taken
upon three distinct questions, Annexation,

past week, several arrivals of Potatoes
have been recorded—-chiefly from Prince
Edward Island——uiost of which, we regret
to say, are nearly a total loss.
Some of the vessels were it fortnight

es, the vapor arose as if from a steam boil-
er. The csculent has almost wholly per-
ished. Cart loads of them were taken to

Flour Speculzitions-.—Very large sales
of flour were made in this city yesterday
before it was known that the Great VVes-
tern had arrived at New York, at an ad-
vance of twenty five to -fifty cents a bar-
rel on previous prices. A few hours af.
ter, the news came, and its tenor justifies
the conclusion that the purchasers must
have had the information before entering
the market. The purchases, it is believed
were on New York account.
