dollars was raised by private subscription on
Monday last, to repair and grade the South Nor-
walk road between Philips’ corner and the
Steamboat Landing. The well known enter-
prise in road matters, of the gentleman who has
taken the direction of this work, is a suflicient
guaranty that it will be done speedily, and well
done. The officers of the Connecticut Turnpike
Co. we are told will make the- road from the
Bridge to Philips’ corner to correspond with the
improvements below. so that our “Jocky Club”
will have the object of their long cherished hope
realized in the possession of a good trotting
course.

at hand, with its usual quantum of intellectual

Congress but the slave-breeding interest, of
\vhichRichmond is thechief port and focus, has
crushed him. A Tc.t'a.s "Whig is chosen Dele-
gate from Richmond city,and Butts is beaten in
the District some 5 or 600'
\Villoughby Newton, who went for Texaslast
winter, and virtually dentunced the Southern
members who went against it as betrayers of
the South, is run out by R. M. T. Hunter,lby a
considerable majority.
_ J. M. l\"Ic’C'.arty, independent wbig, is probably
elected from the London district, over John S.
Pendleton, regular Whig.
Archibald Atkinson, Loco, is doubtless re-elect-
ed from the Norfolk district, though R. H-
\Vhitficld, \Vhig, in all the returns received, is
ahead.
In \Vise’s old district, it is impossible yet to
sav who is elected. Southall, wbig, crosses
Cliesapeak Bay ahead, but it is expected that
the Eastern Shore counties, though \Vliig, will
re-elect Gen. Bayly, loco, who lives in Accomac.
In the Frederick (Xtb) dist. Jacob Bedinger,
ind. Loco, has probably beaten VVm. Lucas, late
loco member.
This is about all’the returns we have, and it
looks like Virginia in her dotage. \Ve shall be
agreeably disappointed if the Whigs have three
of the fifteen Congressmen. They had four in
the last Congress, after Goggin obtained hisseat,
but one bolted on Texas, so that they averaged
about three throughout the term.

whig majority on joint ballot, is now probably
the other way.‘ There can hardly be a doubt
of a Loco Legislature.

The excitement which ll.lS been felt ill this
community consequent upon-the appearance ofa]
rabid dog in its midst some weeks since, has
pretty much subsided. It is however difficult to
ascertain the precise extent ofthe evil which has
been produced. The facts which have thus far
transpired, are nearly as follows. Alarge black
dog said to have been owned in Redding or Wes-
ton, passed through the town, exhibiting as
‘many supposed,signs of bydrophobia. The dog
was shot, but not until he had passed through
nearly the entire length of the town, and not un-
‘til he had bitten certainly one cow, perhaps two
and snapped at several dogs. One of the ani-
mals, known to have been bitten was a cow be-
longing to Walter More, about a mile north of
the village. The cow was confined until Mr.
More was satisfied of_ her worthlessness, and
tamed her into the hands of Stephen Smith. ESQ
Mr. Smith has kept her in a field near his resi-
deuce, discovering no certain evidences of rabid-
ness until Monday last, when, her peculiar con-
duct brought the conviction that the fatal disease

either from temporary suspensions of the work-
ings of the disease, or’ from weakness, compara-
tively harmless at times. '
A cow belonging to Stephen Mott, said‘, on
slight evidence, to have been bitten by the same
dog, discovered a few days since" an unusual de-
gree ofof furiousness, running at eV€I‘Y filing that"
come near. She was confined and kept for sev-
eral days, in much apparent suffering, until she
was unable to keep her legs,and was then knock-
ed in the head. Mr. Mott, and many others,
think she was not rabid, yet the symptoms in
this case are to some extent, similar to those of
the cow of Mt‘. More. Whether either was mad,
in the common sense ofthe term we know not.

THEATRE BURN" FOR THE FOURTH
TIME!
A little after six o’clock, last Friday evening, a
fire broke ottt in the carpenter’s room attached to
the Bowery Theatre, which instantly communi-
cated to the Theatre itself, and in three quarters
of an hour that fine edifice was a complete ruint
Willi nothing but the high walls and the massive
colums standing.‘ The inside ofthe build'ng—
scenery, furniture, wardrobe, machinery, &c. was
entirely destroyed, and several oftheperformers,
we understand,lost private dresses and proper-
ties to considerable amounts. The eveniiig’s
performances were to have been for the benefit of
Mr. Davenport, and the actors and actresses
were all in the building, just dressing for the di:-
ties of the night. So far as could be ascertained
by strict enquiry, every person in the Theatre
escaped in safety, although several ofthem with
narrow risk oflife and liiub.
The fire sought the neighboring buildings, on
either side, and No. 50, Theatre I-Iotel—badly
burnt; No. 52, Coffee House kept by N. Cort.
“Shaw’s House,” No. 44 ; G. \Vestbrook’s Ten-
Pin Alley and Coffee House, No. 42; St. Charles
Hotel, No. 40-all badly damaged. Two small
dwelling houses, and three or four buildings in
the intermediate area much damaged.
In the Theatre nothing was saved, and we
learn that there was no insurance on any part of
the property or building. It is believed that Mr.
Hamblin had no interest in the the Tltcatre, it
having passed, by a recent decree in Chancery,
into the hands of.Iames R. \Vliiting, Esq. The
ground cannot, according to the terms of the
lease, again be occupied forthe purposeoferect-
ing a Theatre.
ANOTHER STEAMBOAT ACCIDENT.
Ab.ut 4 o.'clock_on the morning ofthe 25tli the
steamer Empire, on her way down from Albany
ran into the long pier at 19th st. about two rods
from the end. A heavy fog came offfrom the city
as she neared the pier, rendering it for the
moment, exceedingly dark; and it is said the
pilot thought he had passed the Nineteenth st.,
pier. Finding his error, too late, heonly suc-
ceeded in giving the wheels two backward rev-
olutions before the boat struck with a tremen-
dous crash—breaking the wharf timbers (eight-
teen inches square, and perfectly sound) short off,
and plowing her nose iitto the solid gravel pier
about twenty feet. No one was hurt, although
the scene ofconfusion on board was most dis-
tressing. Her cutwater was entirely carried
away and both her hog braces broken in two.
YET ANOTHER.-—Tl1e Robert L. Stevens, when
at Caldwell’s at half past two, Friday morning,
broke her pillar blocks, &c.
